Some that come to mind:

Sinister is commonly listed as the scariest movie ever online, and I thought it was good but definitely not the scariest movie to me. I’m not sure anything will mess with me as much as Paranormal Activity did the first time I saw it.
Hereditary is the best slow burn horror you can find imo. It’s great.
I really enjoyed Obsession. Real creepy but fun.
I was underwhelmed by Backrooms somewhat. Very cool designs and idea, but it was just okay to me.

The original Halloween is the goat. The Exorcist is very good but it’s really not that scary compared to today’s standards.
And is currently on AMC now.

As a kid, Swamp Thing did me in.
As an adult, The Strangers stayed with me for a couple of days.
I'm not much in the newer movies.
I went and saw the Strangers by myself at the theatre in Flowood. I was out of work for a few months after rotator cuff surgery and had too much time on my hands. Couldn't get any friends to go because they were all working. My girlfriend at the time watched half of the trailer and said "hell no, cut it off". It was me and like 5 other guys in the whole theatre . It like 3 other guys like me that apparently couldn't get anyone else to go with them and another pair of guys. Great movie. Have not even tried to watch any of the sequels.

I know you said only one of each but I love horror and suspense movies so I’m gonna indulge myself. Number one down would be how I personally would rank them and if any were seen vs not seen and it were me looking, I’d go to the next one. I’m more of a fan to the classics so I put more detail on them.

Older (say pre 2000)
1. Exorcist-classic movie, wonderful cinematography, terrifying if you believe it could happen to you
2. Jaws-yeah I said it. Admittedly I had never seen the actual uncut edition of this until last year. My god, how this got a PG rating I’ll never know. And the behind the scenes legends of making this movie are awesome. Check them out of YouTube or podcast if that kind of thing interests you.
3. Scream-funny, scary at times, brutal kills, saved the slasher franchise from extinction
4. Halloween-just wrote the book on slasher movies. The angles used, the lighting, the premise of the movie, and Jamie Lee Curtis cemented herself in horror folklore with her performance.
5. Just for fun, Gremlins-funny, some jump scares, if you have a child you can watch it with them and they not have nightmares for a month, a fun movie that can make you flinch from time to time. Classic

Newer-I’ll qualify this list by saying I have not finished the remainder of the scream franchise so their may be one or more that should be here
1. Halloween 2018-fun, well made, carries the franchise back from the original (rob zombie stuff skipped over). A great restart and solid work by the cast
2. Send Help-this is a funny and fun damn movie. The acting by McAdams is great to me. Not brutal, more psychological to me. But a fun movie that can make you tense at times
3. Primate-wanna see a monkey destroy some humans. Watch this one. Yes there are some plot holes in it but I thoroughly enjoyed
4. IT chapter 1-awesome reboot of the original. Chapter 2 is hard to get through because of length but 1 is a great movie
5. Cabin in the woods-some hard kills, but a funny satire on the horror industry as a whole, and a fun movie. Can’t go wrong with this one

#4 Halloween . I read that book when I was a little kid. The book was sooo much scarier than the movie but it could have been cause I was like 8 years old.

Watched The Exorcist on the front row of the theater in 1974. Went back to our Jackson apartment and collectively agreed that, a) it could happen b) we wouldn’t be able to go to sleep without some sleeping aid. We decided to get roaring drunk. It work. I slept like a baby.

I like horror movies, but I don't consider myself a horror movie guy. I had friends who were obsessed with them, and a lot of the ones they liked, I just didn't get into. It did lead to me watching more horror movies than most people, though, and my approach was more of checking ratings as stuff came out and watching high-rated stuff that didn't necessarily get mass released. Anyway, there's a lot of movies I've missed, but I liked the stuff below. I'm leaving off the classics that have already been covered.

The House of the Devil
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Trick 'r Treat
Hereditary
Let Me In (preferred it to Let the Right One In, even though it was a remake)
VHS (agree with previous recommendation)
The Orphanage
Midsommar
The Witch
The Descent

Newer stuff that I thought was good:
The Black Phone
Sinners
Weapons

For just plain disturbing and must see if you like watching movies in the dark and getting the **** scared out of you:

Last 30 Years…

Event Horizon
Sinister
Hereditary
It Folliows

Old school frights, but still with a modern feel…

The Exorcist
The Thing
Rosemary’s Baby
The Haunting (1960’s version)

Classic B&W…

Frankenstein (1930’s)
Psycho
Carnival of Souls (more obscure, but weird and influential)

As a child:

-The Thing
-Poseidon Adventure (Gene Hackman) Had nightmares of navigating an upside down cruise liner for months.
-War of the Worlds (When they killed the preacher quoting the 23rd Psalm. Not even God can protect us?!)

As a teen:
Halloween
Sleepaway Camp
Devil's Advocate (Rented it & watched by myself. Had to turn the light's on halfway through. Pacino Devil manipulating everything around Keanu freaked me out. Constantine brought that full circle.)

As a Grown a$$ man:
Haunting of Hill House (Wife caught me quick stepping back to bed after a mid-night pee. Bent neck lady was after me.)

I obviously don't seek out horror films like I did from 13-20ish.

Bonus: The first movie that scared me.

I liked Heredity, didn't think it was scary, but that girl hanging her head out of the car scene was shocking.
