Kentucky over South Carolina

I think we may be witnessing the beginning of the end for Shane Beamer at South Carolina. The Gamecocks just have never got it going again after their 9-3 campaign in 2024. LaNorris Sellers hasn’t been good since South Carolina’s season-opener against Kent State and now star pass rusher Dylan Stewart will miss this game due to suspension. Kentucky played poorly last time out against South Alabama, but I imagine the staff spent a lot of extra time preparing for the Gamecocks last week. I think Kentucky has the better coaching staff and the more talented offense.

Pick: Kentucky to win (43% on Novig)

Interesting statement from the article.

"I think Kentucky has the better coaching staff and the more talented offense."

You wanna know what's sad? In 2018, Stein was an assistant coach in high school football in Texas. Beamer met with him when recruiting his players. In the 9 yers since, Stein has moved from high school ball to head coach in the SEC and a perceived better head coach in his first season than Beamer, who has been coaching in college ball for 27 years.

Does Beamer have 27 years experience or one years experience 27 times. It looks like the latter.

I hope so. I don't know how we would, though. In the days leading up to the MSU game, there were some on here saying "MSU is still MSU. We'll win." They came in and kicked our a**es.

I said that. And I stand by it. The reverse jinx, ( or is it just jinx) is one of the few weapons left to us.

UK is a bottom feeder, we will send them back to cellar of the SEC.

The beginning of the end was the Illinois game. I think we're about to see the end of the end.

Hindsight is fun for these typesnof discussion. Who knew, after all that momentum, that laying an egg in that bowl game would be a sign of things to come the way it was.
Well, the Tennessee game was a fluke, everyone knew it and the Clemson game was a late interception away from being a close loss and everyone with any sense of objectivity could see that as well. We also had an improbable win over Missouri that season. The LSU game, though, should have been a win. SC was a realistic 6 or 7 win team that season that somehow managed through hook or crook to tally 9 wins. That was not a legitimate 9 win team and the Illinois game showed it.

The playoff talk at the end of that season was silly. SC would have been destroyed by any of the other playoff teams that year.

Kyle Kennard and Rocket Sanders opted out of that bowl game, and Emmanwori didn't play the 2nd half.

I guess Emmanwori gets the Steve Spurrier Quit on Your Team award since he quit halfway through a game.

I don't remember if Illinois had any players opt out, but Illinois is not, and was not, a very good team.

I imagine, like most bowl games, both sides had some poeple opt out.

But there's no doubt that game was the first sign that things were going downhill. Because it was a bowl (opt outs included), it was easy to write off. But in hindsight, it looks very much like the turning point.

The thing I remember most about that game was how Beamer looked like an unhinged lunatic on the sideline and Bielema looking at him and smiling while he drove him crazy. Bielema played Beamer like a fiddle in that game. That was the thing that made me think Beamer may not be legitimate head coach material. He looked like a man completely out of control.

My son and I were talking about the bowl game the other night in reference to Beamer's "immaturity" if you will. His explosion on the sideline was just dumb. Nick quitting at halftime was completely disrespectful and Shane should have called it out for what it was, but he glossed over it. He also caused himself and the team some problems when, after the climpson game he was touting LaNorris as the best football player in the country. That set us all up for what has followed and we won't see another QB on the field outside of injury or ridiculoulsy late garbage time.

It was embarassing.

What was most frustrating is how stubborn Beamer was. It was obvious the refs were going to let Illinois continue doing their late substitutions, but Beamer kept on doing what he was doing even thought it was throwing off our offense.

I had forgotten about the temper tantrum. First, thats on him for not knowing the rules. You dont sub late on offense. Any sensible coach will punish you for it, well within the rules too.

But I am remembering too, we called a signal in the end zone like we were giving up on the kick, but then ran it anyway? If I recall, they changed the rule for that play to be illegal, or count as a fair catch now.

I remember their fat coach giving that signal to Beamer and that just ratcheted Shane up.

What riled me was that Beamer KEPT subbing late, even after the refs made it obvious that they were going to let Illinois run their subs on late, too. It was stalling our offense, but he kept doing it.

I mean, hey, you try it once or twice, if you see that Bielema is going to counter you on it and the refs are going to allow it (because it's legal) then quit doing it. It was a very stupid "strategy" by Beamer.

Yes. Its also a very simple rule that should have been known.

If he threw a tantrum over a lesser known rule, that would be different.

Right, every coach in America does that when an offense makes a late substitution, it is a well established strategy to force the offense to use a timeout.

If I recall, Beamer was trying to run subs in very late on the play clock and try to snap it quick. Defenses have a few seconds to make their own substitution and Bielema was using the whole window. The refs were rightly holding up the offense b/c Bielema had the right to make subs.

I don't know why Beamer thought it would work. I don't know why he persisted in doing it when it wasn't working.

Yes, Beamer was trying to be too clever by half and it blew up in his face. He was too stubborn to change his tactic and, instead, looked like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum on the sideline.

Whenever the offense substitutes, the refs are going to stop the offense from snapping the ball until the defense has a chance to substitute. The defense can substitute up until the ball is snapped, but they run the risk of the offense snapping the ball and catching them with too many or too few players on the field. The defensive players leaving the field have to leave at a reasonable pace, they can't slow walk to the sideline to run the play clock down, but they don't have to sprint either. The refs have discretion as to whether or not a defensive player is loafing getting off of the field.

These aren't new rules, they have been in place for a long time.

Beamer when he read the NCAA rule book on defensive substutions:

That was confirmation. He had showed signs of immaturity and stubbornness well prior, that was just the most obvious display.

We didn't play Tennessee that year.

Yes, the bowl game was a sign of the terrible things to come, but up to that, it was one of our best seasons ever. Virtually every 9 and 10 win team is usually a play or two away from being a 7 win team. We were also a play or two (or a field goal kicker) away from being a 10 or 11 win team. In addition to the games you mentioned, we also destroyed Oklahoma in Norman and beat a then-#10 A&M handily. Then something happened before the bowl game and Sellers hasn't been the same since.
