What a shame - I would have loved to see him at top form for the early games and the playoffs. That could have been something special.

Myson Johnson-Cook is out for the majority of his senior high school season after suffering a broken collarbone. [1, 2]
The standout four-star Auburn football running back commit sustained the injury on August 22, 2026, during the opening weekend of the high school football season. Playing for East St. Louis High School, Johnson-Cook was injured in the first half of their 42-23 victory over Chicago Mt. Carmel and did not return for the second half. Before exiting, he had already rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries. [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Recovery Timeline & Future Plans

Despite the unfortunate timing, the injury is not expected to affect his college status:
  • Auburn Commitment: He remains firmly committed to the Auburn Tigers.
  • Early Enrollment: The recovery period aligns with his plans to enroll early at Auburn in December 2026.
  • Spring Practice: By enrolling early, he is expected to be fully healed and cleared to participate in spring practices when they begin in April 2027. [1, 2, 6]

No, Myson Johnson-Cook is not expected to play again this season for East St. Louis High School. [1, 2]
The broken collarbone he sustained during the August 22 season-opener has sidelined him for most, if not all, of the regular season and playoffs. Because his recovery timeline is extended, and he is scheduled to graduate and enroll early at the Auburn Tigers in December 2026, his high school football career with the Flyers has officially come to an end. [1]

The East St. Louis Flyers have had to continue their dominant postseason push and quest for an IHSA Class 7A state title without their star four-star running back. [2, 3]

Sadly, I figured this is how his HS career would end once he went down. They talked about him being back for the playoffs, but he was never going to risk his college career or NIL for HS playoffs.

What about his freshman year stats in IL?

During his 2023 freshman season at Decatur MacArthur High School, Myson Johnson-Cook had 94 carries. [1]
He optimized those 94 attempts for a massive 1,343 yards, averaging an incredible 14.3 yards per carry on his way to 20 touchdowns.

His stellar freshman campaign earned him a spot on the MaxPreps Freshman All-America Team. MCJ christened his high school career with a 60-yard touchdown run on his very first varsity play. [1, 2, 3]

That sucks... still high hopes for this kid at the next level and maybe beyond... but truly unfortunate we didn't get to see more of him here in Illinois after his return from Texas. Wish him the best though...

Loss for the fans but agree with the sentiment that he has to secure the bag so I understand shutting it down.
Totally agree - secure the bag, but it is a loss for fans. I mean, Kid averaged 11.5 a carry throughout high school. He was going to be the feature back this year, would have been involved in the passing game and was another year developed. I wanted to see what he could do to school boys before heading to Auburn.

Another nugget:

Nike officially signed 11 high school football players to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) sponsorship deals. This marks the brand's largest disclosed class of prep football athletes. [1, 2, 3]
The athletes were chosen following standout performances at Nike's premier high school showcase, The Opening Finals, held at its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The 11 sponsored prospects from the recruiting classes of 2027 and 2028 include: [1, 2, 3]

12 carries over 17 months is not a good situation for the kid to be able to perform at a high level. Unfortunate.
I see the opposite - low use back whose LEGS are fresh. A collarbone can happen to anyone. But his overall body is pristine, like finding a 2007 Corvette with 10k miles under a tarp in a barn. Polish it up, flush the fuel, and you have a monstrous machine in no time, undiminished.

Agree. Auburn probably loving that he only averaged 80 carries per year in HS. If he ends up being a work horse the low milage he has on his body will be an asset.

Not sure why people think 12 carries in 17 months will effect him. A running backs job is fairly simple.

You have to drive it or it don’t work. The college game is much faster than high school. It is very difficult to adjust. Time will tell.

He will be just fine. He has spring ball to get the feel back.

Yes, the college game is way faster and it is difficult to adjust. But that can be said for a RB with 80 carries over his HS career or 500 carries. You don't know who will adjust to the college game but his carries in HS are not going to factor in that calculus.

That's probably one of the reasons he's enrolling early. He'll take part in spring practice and have a leg up on the other incoming freshmen.

You’re going to presume I’m a hater but I’m anything but. I’ve been aware of MJC since he was in the 7th grade.

Or perhaps more accurately was absolutely dumbfounded to see a 6’1 200lb 7th grader with Int’l elite track speed. Everything I’ve ever seen (from afar and a few who have mingled with him) is he’s great and his family is great and the “JC’s” have been an athletic phenomenon for several generations.

That said I can’t help but worry he’s on 5 star bust alert. IMO his physical tools should be categorized as 6star. They should literally create a new category and I say this with a straight and sober face.

But the Theiss kid from Fenwick or Melo at Loyola with this physical attributes and Melos 6star vision and toughness?

know what I’m sayin? Curious as to your thoughts as no doubt you’ve seen him down to down 100x of what I have.

Not true - you have seen him way more. I was aware of this monster from Decatur via Edgy, watched one DeSoto game when he was a sophomore, saw maybe 60 of his 88 carries last year, tracked his few track appearances last year and each carry in the MTC game.

I WAS HIGHLY IMPRESSED! But if you've seen him since he was a kid, you know more, especially if you know the family.

One thing that stood out last year, on a pick six, MJC was the ONLY Flyer that gave his absolute all to catch up with the Fenwick guy racing toward the endzone. That stuck out to me as a dude who really cares.

I’m hoping he kills it. Rooting for him. Just seems like DeSoto didn’t go that great nor ESL tbh. Then again expectations for him are off the charts. That size and speed is insane. Like Bo Jackson insane or just shy of it.

900 yards, 14 TDs, and over 10 yards per carry at a top Texas program, as a back up. What in God's name were your expectations?
Idk a five star since he was a freshman, 4.2/4.3 40yd type guy at 215 lbs to be a back up even at DeSoto and 900yds is well below that caliber of talent. 2k yds szn is not crazy for those types of kids at all. Yeah elite Tx football I get it but just look at szn last year.

His hype is far more on ceiling than actual production. Last year Theiss played like the five star in that game MJC was anything but that…

Not knocking the kid want to be clear about that. 1 in a million level talent no question and by all accounts I’ve heard incredible kid off the field.

It’s just curious why the elite production isn’t there.

Tells you about the talent level at a place like DeSoto if he didn't start. Last year he wasn't a feature back and that's not on him, Sunk likes to get too cute for his own good and tried to spread the wealth instead of feeding the beast.

I thought you said you followed his career? All of these observations are fairly obvious.

I thought he had a good year last year at ESL considering he split time with 2 others.
Yep. Over 10 yards per touch and 20 TDs. Also, in addition to splitting carries he never played a full game once the conference season started.
