Johnny Carson was born on October 23, 1925. Did you know that he attended Millsaps College in Jackson? Carson didn’t graduate from Millsaps, but he did attend the school’s V-12 Navy College Training Program before serving in World War II. This program was designed as an accelerated training program for young military men to become officers during the war. Enrollees were typically college-aged or just out of high school.

Following the war and his service in the Navy, Carson returned home and attended college at the University of Nebraska.

I still watch Johnny. Best intro music ever too
The Johnny Carson theme was written by Paul Anka, the crooner and song writer from the late 50s and 60s.

Carson asked Anka to write it, loved it, and took it the NBC execs. They told him they couldn't afford it and would just stick with what they had. Anka told Carson he would split the royalties with him 50/50 if he would go back to NBC and try again, and he was amazingly able to convince them the second time around.

He also dated a girl from Belzoni. There is a Youtube clip of him mentioning it during his show.

As a proud Millsaps graduate, yes, I knew Johnny “Kit” Carson (as he was listed in that year’s annual) attended the Navy V-12 program. Carson would occasionally mention his Navy training on air.

that is one of the coolest fun facts I have ever heard. Now it makes sense why he was so successful......he spent time in the south w/ southern folks.

I loved his show, and when my parents told me I could stay up, that is what I watched. Absolute comedy genius of late night TV

I wish we had those times back
