She was only 20 years old. Is it possible to be certified to fly a Lear Jet at 20?
She was co pilot. Not pilot. Looks like her experience was about bare minimum to co pilot a jet like that. If she was paired with a very experienced pilot maybe not a problem. But if he was also near the minimum to pilot the plane big problem. The storm they flew into grew so quickly may not be much anyone could have done.

According to an article I read, she received her private pilot's license when she was 17, and received her commercial pilot's license in March of this year. Sounds like even though she was young, she was fairly experienced.

From the video, and I believe the NTSB is thinking along those lines now, it looked like the tail (horizontal stabilizer and vertical stabilizer) was not on the plane when it crashed. If that's the case, nobody could have calmly turned the plane.

The stabilizers probably broke free from drag on the rapid descent. Especially if they had the controls pulled into their chest trying to get it to climb.

Yes, copilot. But from what I hear when watching Air Disasters, a Lear is notoriously hard to fly. She's said to be certified on the jet, but she couldn't have many hours. I've not heard anything about the actual pilot, but probably will fairly soon.

The "news" channels (Fox News, CNN, etc.) showed some of the press conference this afternoon but soon cut away to show the same old, same old politics, which was a bit infuriating. I finally found it on YouTube but it was mostly over by that time.

It was traveling at Mach 0.9 upon impact. That airframe isn’t built to withstand those speeds.

Agree. And they were likely covered in ice that made all the worse. MIght've been earlier and a cause rather than merely an effect, with severe turbulence exacerbated by the ice. It'll be interesting to see how whoever owned the plane handled the maintenance, if something was skipped, etc.

I remember watching a program where a small commuter turboprop crashed in Texas, and it was determined that the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer had been removed but rivets/screws were not replaced. It resulted in the tail section breaking free of the plane and causing the crash. No ice was involved there.

I suspect the black box, to the extent the plane had one or even it had one at all, is totally unusable if it's even found.

If she’s co pilot on one of those jets she’s got some hours to get just to that level. She got her license when she was 17.

I have a friend who flies one similar to that jet and was the co pilot for a while and is now fully certified.

From quick googles earlier today it takes 1,300 hours to get certified to be co pilot on that jet & she had 1,300 hours. That’s a lot for someone so young but she got her pilots license before she got her drivers license. If she’s with an experienced pilot, I see no problem. In any case I think it’s a real safe bet the final report won’t say the copilot crashed the plane.

Just had a coworker tell me this is a government conspiracy to try and make Trump look like Superman. It was all staged to allow Trump to claim he survived another attack. I’m not sure if the coworker viewed this government plan as a good thing or bad. I just stared without responding verbally. Anyway, hope he votes today. God Bless America.

Fact:

The growing number of people such as your coworker hint at the future growing need of more mental health providers. People are losing their ability to think clearly.

Mental health workers or therapist can't cure willful ignorance, conspiracy thinking, or someone's dependence of online validation loops. Flat earthers, pizza gate, conspiracy theorist on this incident... all of these people have one thing in common. They're all deeply 17'n moronic people who share a pattern.. they find other people via algorithms that reward suspicion, outrage, and certainty over evidence. Once these folks attach their identity and personality to "knowing the hidden truth" facts don't even matter because it's no longer intellectual.. it's purely emotional and breaking their own beliefs would destroy their fragile ego.

Therapy can help you understand the way you process feelings, severe trauma, burnout, shame, and repetitive relationship patterns or dealing with grief.. It can't cure your crazy uncle from Crenshaw, MS who thinks a plane crash is a Trump conspiracy...

I have an aunt that would totally buy that theory.

Go 17 yourself. She was the co-pilot with over 1300 hours in the sky. Her job was the radio and she did it exceptionally well in the face of death as they fell to the ground at more than 500 mph. You disgust me. The actual pilot who was flying was a 55 year old man btw
So, the copilot texted her boyfriend 10 minutes before the crash that they were encountering ice, ATC gives them permission to deviate left or right, the crew decided to climb as it would save time.

A family is dead due to the crews incompetence.

Go 17 yourself.

so get mad at the pilot.

You seem to be fixated on the woman. Is it because it’s a woman copilot?

If you’re interested in the story from the perspective of a subject matter expert, this is worth your time…

That video has a detailed description of thunderstorms and why you never 17 with them as a pilot.

He has a YouTube channel with a more recent update. One interesting point is that while the captain who was flying the plane was apparently 55 years old, it appears he came to his career later in life and might not have been as experienced as his age might indicate…
