No, Space Age Love Song makes them not a 1 hit wonder.

I'd be willing to guess 99.9999999% of the inhabitants of Earth would agree, Flock of Seagulls are only known for one song. But, if you insist, I'll say that you're correct. It did reach #30 very briefly on Billboard's Top 100 so I 'guess' you could say it was a 'hit'. I listened to it on YouTube and I'm pretty positive I've never heard it but I stand corrected.

I looked up Free and was very surprised. They were around for 5 years, 6 albums and sold > 20 million albums before they split. Lead singer, Paul Rodgers, went to become lead singer of Bad Company. I only know their one song but I'm guessing if you sold 20+ million albums over a 5 year period, it would be hard to argue that they were a 'one hit wonder'. But, as I said, I only know the one song.

Yeah, I Ran would be the one most think of... but 80's techno-pop fans know Space Age Love Song very well. It was also on a couple movie soundtracks, I think.

FoS also had Wishing, which made it to #26.

I'm thinking they were also much bigger in foreign markets

This one is interesting. Both one-hit wonders (I think)... mostly the same band and the same lead singer, Freddy Curci, just different band names

So, according to Martin, if the Beetles or LZ only had 1 American hit, they would have been 1hw's too?

By the way. The Grateful Dead are considered 1HWs.

And they hated the publicity that came with Touch of Grey. Threw them in a spot light that they didn't enjoy, especially Jerry.

On a side note since they were mentioned, Dave Roback, the guitarist from Mazzy Star passed away yesterday. I'm actually a huge Mazzy Star fan, something about his guitar playing and Hope Sandoval's voice is very calming. My pooch is actually named Mazzy in honor of them.
Same with Cowboy Junkies, not as big of a fan but Margo Timmons has a very soothing tone.

Jesus and Mary Chain is not a one hit wonder but Hope's voice certainly helps on this song.

What? No "And I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls?

I listed it, but guess it did not post. Funny line I think of every time something about Flock Of Seagulls comes up. In the movie The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dr. Evil says something to the effect "Nothing much to miss about the 80's, a gas shortage and A Flock Of Seagulls and that's about it."

Might be wrong but im pretty sure Words actually made the top 40 charts?

Was their 1 hit so to speak

-intrawbs says walking in l.a. made it to #89 in 1983...words made #42 in 1982. Given that the chick was scantily clad most of the time im willing to call top 100 a hit.
