#1 Kentucky Loses At Home

Sixty years ago: Georgia Tech won 59-58 at Memorial Coliseum, which ended UK's 129-game home winning streak.


I recently found out that this was the one and only game my grandparents ever made it to see. Grandma & Grandpa got all dolled up (Grandma with the new dress!) and left the hills of Grant County for a Big Night On The Town in Lexington. To say this was an extremely rare event for them, would be a massive understatement. They went to a "fancy restaurant" and then joined the other 8498 Cat Fans to see Kentucky play basketball.

I'd always heard they went to a game and the Wildcats came up short... but I never knew it was THAT game, until a few months ago. They both passed several years ago... I sure wish my Younger Self had known enough to ask for a recap of that night, way back when.

Many many people until that night had never in their lifetime had seen Kentucky lose before.

Rupp was highly pissed is the story and was going to take it out on Tech in Atlanta when they had the return game. Unbelievably didnt work out then either as Tech won that game as well.

An elder cousin of mine attended this game.
Shell-shocked.
He once told me, "You could hear the proverbial 'pin drop' it was so quiet at the end of the game as everyone made their way to the exits."

I've read a lot about that game. The comment about people never seeing the Cats lose was exactly right. People couldn't watch on TV and those that could get tickets from time to time always saw the Cats put up a W. Note sure how many years that winning streak encompassed, but it was a LONG time since they had lost at home.

The Cats at home were like the Globetrotters playing the Washington Generals.

After using Jon Scott's wonderful UK Stats link, I was surprised to see that GT also won the rematch. To add to the shock, UK was ranked #1 again in the 2nd game.

An article about the game states that it was the GT coach's 17th victory in 76 games at Tech over four seasons. Somehow, a guy who was only winning 1 out of 4 games pulls off the sweep of UK.

I was at that game with my parents. In those days adults wore coats and ties and proper dresses. When the shot went in there was a deadly silence then everyone simply paraded out without a sound.
Not sure but I seem to remember that GT only won a couple of other games that year?

Bill Evans is an old friend of the family. He worked with my Dad at KFC. Bill was the starting pg on this team and was the one who actually turned the ball over in the waning seconds which cost us the game and ended the streak. It took him a while, but he can actually handle the jokes these days.

Hey Dezy, I have lived in these Grant Co. hills all of my life. I`m curious as to your Grandparents names.And also the area they was from. That was in 1955 and I was born in !958, but might have knew them. This area was alot smaller back then.

Hey Jim,

They lived in Corinth... had a few acres on Blanchet Road, just off of 25. I spent my early days running around those hills and walking the railroad tracks.

Your age puts you close to my oldest cousin, who was born in '61 or '62. Maybe you crossed paths with her (Darlene) in high school?

That 129 winning streak was darn impressive though...will never be broke or even anything close to it IMO.

Way too tough nowadays with the one and done era and such. Hell, we have a really good team this year and we almost lost to Ole Miss at home. Cal only losing 4 home games in 6 seasons thus far is very impressive.
