sort of a spin off to Cloverfield? I loved the original. Was a very unique approach to the traditional monster movie. This looks to be another approach at telling a monster movie from a different perspective.

This film was originally made under the names Valencia and The Cellar for Paramounts Insurge division(a subsidiary for films made for under 5 million dollars like The Devil Inside), and when Paramount closed it down, this movie(shot and completed) was thrown out to the wind and orphaned. Paramount bought it back up and had Dan Casey and Damien Chazelle do some re-writes so that it would connect to the Cloverfield universe and they went back and did reshoots and add-ons in March 2015 in New Orleans and L.A.

This is a cash grab by Paramount so that they could make some quick bucks off of this film(which probably wouldn't have made a lot of money in its original non-Cloverfield incarnation). They are trying to spin this into something its really not. The budget is only 5 million dollars and they are releasing it in IMAX to make a little extra dough.

Also take into account that no one from the original cloverfield is working on this(aside from JJ Abrams, who was really just responsible for pitching the first movie to Paramount) and The original film was very much Drew Goddard and Matt Reeve's vision.

It still looks like it could be a decent movie, but if you're a big fan of Cloverfield I'd keep the above in mind.

Yeah, I saw that and was a little disappointed, but I still think it sounds interesting. I'm not expecting to see a bunch of cgi and monsters. In fact there probably won't be any, which to me makes it even more "creepy". Just the thought that the reason these people are locked down in that pit is because a giant monster is up there somewhere sounds dope

Trailer looks interesting, then again most do. I like John Goodman, so there's that. I definitely found Cloverfield entertaining, not that memorable or anything I really really liked but definitely a good popcorn flick.

@B Rax

You're not going to believe this, but the director used to host two of my favorite podcasts and I met him at a meet and greet in NYC in 2007ish.

I've been waiting for his directorial debut since then and am pretty pumped for him.

Excited at first until I found out it has absolutely nothing to actually do with Cloverfield or JJ Abrams....UNLESS that's just a clever misdirection and brilliant marketing campaign by JJ.

Could still be a good movie though, it's been out there for a while.

I think it was a great popcorn flick as well and I think that's all it ever aspired to be

What's hilarious is there is a counter-culture of contrarians that have spawned from this movie, and they are almost desperate to tell you how terrible it was.

It'll definelty be tied to the original somehow, as in what's happening in that movie is a result of what happened in the original. I don't see how you can watch that trailer and not think that. The ground shaking, the way "cloverfield" appears before the rest of the title, and the fact that the posters for both films look so similar.

Like I said, I'm not expecting much of the monster from the original or any of the cast, but I'm pretty sure there will be "acknowledgment" of that film throughout this one.

The end card reads "DEDICATED TO THE VICTIMS OF THE CLOVERFIELD MONSTER ATTACK. R.I.P."

Maybe I am in the minority, but I hate movies filmed in the first person. The camera bouncing around just bugs me. This movie looks interesting especially since they dropped the first person camera and went toward a more traditional camera view.

This was a movie that had nothing to do with Cloverfield to begin with and then they tacked it on later.

In the original conceit, the girl didn't know if something really happened outside and the guy actually saved her or if the guy was lying - and the audience wouldn't know either until they saw the movie.

Now that Cloverfield is attached, it kind of kills that that suspense, I guess. But I bet a lot more people will see it since it says "Cloverfield."

Sounds like it would've been a lot more interesting and suspenseful if you didn't know if there was a monster or not and were trying to figure out if the guy keeping them there was a psycho/crazy. I like that angle a lot better than the fact that you would know there was a monster the entire time.

People always reference Idiocracy, talk about idiocracy, say things like "Have you ever seen idiocracy?" when you mention something about rednecks or welfare. But the problem is idiocracy is an absolutely awful movie. Its execution, visuals, and acting are absolutely awful and I haven't been able to make it past the first 20 minutes, ever. Its just a lame, cheesy movie. If only they actually made idiocracy a good movie it would be worth referencing a lot more.

The studio cut the budget once they realized it was essentially a eugenics movie and Robert Rodriguez's production company did some of the SFX for free just to help Mike Judge out.

EDIT: It also portrays Hispanics in a pretty bad light, so I get why you really wouldn't like it.

Most cult classics are kinda cheesy and Idiocracy wasn't meant to be award winning cinema.

It is great because of Terry Crews and also the opening sequence. The opening sequence is the primary reason this movie is a cult classic.

Well, I don't want to see the cloverfield movie anymore because joeypodcasts made fun of me for thinking it looked like a cool idea. Maybe they can just throw this movie away and make a 37th bond movie where James Bond walks around and shoots people and drives a cool fast car. maybe even have some reckless sex

The joke's on you.

I don't even like James Bond movies that much, I just picked it because the "Bond Formula" and absurdity of the films lends itself to an easy rigor for structuring a podcast format - and good times with my pals.

Edit: And an excuse to research and buy "GEAR."

Its a prequel to the Flintstones. The big twist is that 10 clover field lane resets the world to the prehistoric times ... Sorry to ruin the movie for you guys
