Now that we are a few years into the new rule making it a 33 yarder what are your thoughts on it? I don't really care for it. I get the attitude of if it is so automatic then why bother but by doing that they have made the kickers a much bigger part of deciding games. Is that what the rule was intended to do, make the kickers more important.

Sure. Kicking isn't really part of the game unless it involves success and failure.
How about a rule requiring the player who scores any TD to kick the PAT, but eliminating the snap, hold, and block rush?

Add spotting the ball on a line perpendicular to the spot where the goal line was crossed, or ball caught. This is a rugby conversion. Crazy, right? Score at the pylon and walk it out to the 35 looking for the angle on the posts. This in turn changes the way you approach scoring TDs, as well as red zone defense.
every scoring play should be more than automatic.... especially in pro ball... the above poster using the Rugby rule is interesting.
It is funny that we have pushed the foot out of football, except for one or two specialists. Soccer birthed rugby, which birthed American football. Perhaps somewhere on the way to a safer game we reemphasize kicking as a general skill. How about a rule that anyone punting must have participated on the preceding down??? How crazy would that be? I'd love it. We've made our game too industrial.
You may be getting to the point where going for 2 is the percentage play.
My point was that we have made kickers too important in the outcome of games. I would rather them do away with the kick than this. If you want to do something with the point after make it worth 1 from the 2 and 2 from the 10 or something like that. At least the football players would be deciding the game.
