Back in HS Roy blocked one of my shots from the deep corner and I swear he had a foot in the lane. It was humbling to see the ball 3 rows back in the stands . The Sultan of Swat.

Funny, my claim to fame in HS is I got an and 1 on Roy. Later worked with his mom. Nice lady.

That was my time as a student and those were my teams. Never missed a game. Used to love watching Battle play. Names like Brunson, Black, Ellerbe, Tillman are players I've not thought of in a long time. Would love to see this Team recognized at the RAC.
Same here. Here's a story I've told before...in the spring of 1981, my sophomore year, I was living in Hegeman and played a ton of pick-up games on the outdoor court there, as my next door neighbors (Chuck and Darryl from Philly, who were both very good players) got me to come out and play with them, as I would've been reluctant otherwise. I think they mostly liked "showing me off" as one of the few 6'2" white guys who could easily dunk, lol (had a ~36" vertical back then), as I wasn't a great dribbler or shooter, but could rebound, defend, block shots and make lots of garbage hoops and throw a few down.

So, after a few weeks of playing regular games there, one day we started up and as usual, guys mostly covered guys that they were similar in height with and I was on my friend Darryl's team and he told me to cover that guy over there, who was about my height. So, a few minutes in, the guy I was covering got a pass near the top of the key and put up a jumper - I was on him quickly and leapt, blocking his shot and since the ball went backwards, I was able to get it quickly, run down the court and throw down a reverse jam.

I heard the most hootin' and hollerin' ever - and I was a bit confused until Darryl, high-fived me and said "damn, you just destroyed Brian Ellerbe!" I knew who Brian was, but didn't recognize him and even he was laughing and gave me a high five for the play, but next time down the court he's dribbling and I'm covering him again and he says, "alright, watch this," and he proceeded to fake me out so badly on a reverse spin move and easy layup it wasn't funny - more hootin' and hollerin'. He then made a few long jumpers, but overall I didn't do too badly and did have a dunk on an alley-oop. Then went back with Chucky and Darryl to the dorm room with some of the other guys and smoked a few bongs, lol - lots of laughs over the block and dunk.

I've never forgotten that team, who were mostly freshmen when I was a senior (79-80)
How could anyone forget our last NCAA win?

I remember Lou Carnesecca was there scouting the game because st John's had a bye and were playing the winner of our game. At the end of the game there was some goid natured banter between Looie and the Rutgers students

Missed the first half or more of the first round game in Hartford.

My parents, nephew (who would later go to Rutgers and become sports and Targum editor) and I were stuck on I84 in Danbury which was shut down for an accident that required a helicopter transport. We sat there for three plus hours. I guess we were so close that they didn’t have an exit to direct us around it.

We had a great burger at a bar afterwards.

And great posters For the SJU game.

What may have been the original Paint the town Scarlet poster and one of my all time favorites, “Mullin it(‘s) over: Go RU. “
