Has anyone had a root canal? I have to have my first on Thursday and just looking for any insight on what to expect. Any input would be much appreciated.

It isn't that bad. I've had them and gone back to work after. Not advisable but the point remains.

In my experience, they are certainly not fun but not anything painful or terrible.

Mine was in the early 90's and it sucked. But I'm sure the technology has come a long long way compared to the bloodletting I went through.

They can be a 1 or a 10 on the pain scale....depends on the severity of the infection and which tooth. This is not a one type fits all in terms of what has to be done to the tooth.

I got one about a year ago and the pain was nothing.
The setup with the open mouth piece/guard gave me a little claustrophobia.
Other than that, no post RC pain either.
It's a breeze.

Truth. Mine 50 years ago were awful. Last several were not bad. Added note: I've lost count as to how many I've had. 8-10 I guess.

I've had several and never had any big problems. The one last fall was the worst. I don't think the doc numbed it enough, and then she acted like she downed a couple of Red Bulls before starting. Very jumpy and worked at a hectic pace. It was throbbing when I left but a couple of ibuprofen took care of it.

Ive had two. One was relatively painless. The other was more pain during the procedure, but afterward ok-ish.

Root Canal is done. Thanks for all the input and well wishes. Overall, it wasn’t too bad. It started and all was good then I started to feel it so I let him know. Eventually it was completely numb and went well. At the end, the doctor said it took double the normal dose to get me numb as it does most people. Either way, it was much easier than I was worried it would be. Now just have to wait a couple weeks to get a crown put on.

Good deal. Did your regular dentist do it or did s/he send you to a RC specialist?

Sent me to a specialist here in Lexington. Said they could do them but since my insurance covered a specialist and thats all they do she wanted me to go there just in case there were any unforeseen issues. There weren't thankfully

I’ve had one, a molar. It was uneventful except for the dentist’s irritation when he discovered that my molar had four roots instead of the usual three. Why would he be upset? More work for him? More cost?

They've really gotten good with the technology now. I had a couple due to cracked teeth (used to have a really bad ice-chomping habit) and there was no pain for me once I got in there and had it done. The worst part for me was the time investment. It's a long procedure, and then you have to go back a time or two to finish it up with a crown.

I just got the temporary crown put on this week. The permanent one will be put on in at the beginning of Oct. I too like to chomp on ice.
