Crazy story about how a guy bought this:

And zoomed in you see this:

And the guy on the left has been positively identified as Billy the Kid. The photo is of him and his gang The Regulators playing croquet. Only the 2nd ever photo ever verified of him in existence. Very cool.

Thanks for link. Great story!

Billy the Kid was a better guy than we were led to believe.

This is an intriguing fragment of a story. I'd love to read much more about the process of verification. What's the event? Who are the other people? Given that there is only one other photo of BTK verified, how can you be certain this is him?

I'm not a doubter but I'm sure if they are asking $5 million for this photo, then they have a very persuasive case that it really is BTK. I'd love to be persuaded.

I read in Ron Hansen's Assassination of Jesse James book that Billy the Kid and Jesse met one time on a train and played poker in a group together.

If that is true, damn…that would be pretty awesome to witness.

This is why being in the antiques business can be fun and rewarding. For example, while not in the same realm as this photo, I recently bought a aqua-colored scroll flask (bottle) for $3 at a yard sale that is worth $75. These treasure hunts can be quite fruitful.

Crazy.

So, the one used for this is the only other verified photo?

I guess I thought there'd have been a couple of his "dead" ones floating around somewhere.

Intrawebz search shows a couple other pics that some people are making a claim as BTK.

Dear Governor Axtell. I've heard that you will give 200 dollars for my head. Perhaps we should meet and talk. I am at the Juarez village at the border. Send 3 men, and instruct them not to shoot, as I am unarmed. In short, Sir; I surrender. Your obedient servant William H. Bonney. PS: I changed my mind. Kiss my ***. - Billy the Kid

From what little detail there is it doesn't look like the same person in the verified photo and the one playing croquet . Eyes seem further apart with less eyebrow , besides that you would think he would have a gun holster on at all times . Maybe it is him but I wouldn't buy that photo based on the distance it was taken from , I guess if you believe it's btk that's all that matters .

Yeah, it might be him, but I don't know how you'd get to the level of confirmed with it?

The only real clues are the approximate size, the whatever-you-call-that-style of hat... and maybe someone knew that BTK had a snazzy croquet-playing sweater just like that in his closet.

So the murder total of a completely different person means Billy The Kid was a better guy than we were once led to believe?

By that "logic," Ted Bundy was a better guy than we were previously led to believe because Andre Chikatilo had 53 confirmed murders.

I guess in your mind Allied soldiers were bad for killing. It was a feud. BTK did not kill like you were taught. Comparing BTK to Bundy is laughable.

I once bought one of those blueish looking coke bottles at a yard sale for 25c that was worth $5 and when I couldn't find any takers I shot it with my BB gun.

I've got a photo of Leroy Byrd posterizing Billy The Kid on the Blue Courts. Leroy's nuts are all up in BTK's grill.

Hasn't been verified by any photography experts yet...but it's a pretty cool pic.

It is real. Not sure why they did not notice trees lack leaves. Unless they were dead, October through April. May be dead.
