He's pulled in one top 50 recruit. Let's not call it a superclass just yet.
He actually pulled in a top ten recruit (possibly top 5), as Flip is getting ready to get a massive ratings bump and be in the conversation with Emoni, Duren, Shaedon Sharpe and Cason Wallace. That’s likely to be the top 5-6 prospects in the nation come the next rankings.

We also know that Whitehead and/or Mitchell will be in Duke’s class before the end of August. However, I still believe to have an elite class, we need to pick up at least one really good guard and also land Lively. Otherwise, we will have a collection of great forwards in Flip, Whitehead and Mitchell, and will have to fill other holes via the transfer portal.

That would be a good get. I would assume Roach and Moore come back, although you never know. Keels could return, but I have a feeling he is one and done, based on his size. Our recruiting philosophy suggests Williams will probably leave after this year.

Hopefully after seeing what happened to DJ, will make a guy or two that’s not a sure fire 1st round pick think about their decisions next year more carefully. If we can come into 2022 season with Roach, Moore, and Keels then that would be nice.

Imagine the that this year’s NBA draft will basically guarantee that Williams goes pro next year given the amount of reaching that NBA teams did to get either college or overseas big men. If Williams was in the draft Thursday, he would have likely gone in the 1st round and possibly been the 1st Duke player taken instead of Jalen Johnson.

I do think with NIL there is a bit less incentive to leave early. Hopefully that is a positive for the college game.

It's possible. (I just read he was offered 500k by the G League) I don't know if I would turn that down.

Could whitehead skip college and go to the gleague?

Imagine Duke will be leaning on the new NIL rules to be able to show Whitehead that it still makes sense financially to come to Duke. Think he still announces for the good guys tomorrow, but we may have to fight to keep him here and out of the G League. Think it was calculating on the G League’s part to wait and offer that $ right after the draft and 12-16,hours before he’s scheduled to announce.

Makes it difficult for college teams to show him how coming to their school would bring in similar $$. Don’t see Kansas or FSU being our competition here. Think the G League strategy backfires for now, as Dariq doesn’t seem like the type of kid that’s not going to do his homework.

There's something fishy about that. OFC

One would think it wouldn’t be hard to make 500, 000 off the new NIL.but then again money rules everything.

I don’t think that we can get him anywhere near $500k but think that Duke and companies associated with Duke could get him a couple hundred grand. Add in a scholarship to Duke, which can be completed at anytime plus the amount of eyes that only Duke and Kentucky can generate via TV begins to equal things out.

Don’t see the NIL to be used to match pro dollars but to make an athlete enough money that he and his family is comfortable during their time in college. Know Kennedy Chandler just signed NIL deal for close to six figures.

Master p’s son inked a two million dollar deal and hasn’t stepped foot on the court yet and wasn’t a top 75 recruit. Rest assured it won’t be hard with exposure at Duke

Great to see Whitehead turn down the $500K offer from the G-league (that kind of money makes me think the NBA has no interest in working with colleges).

Who knows what he will make at Duke but the gloves are off. Now it's time the alumni step up their game.

Wild West has yet to really amp up. In 3-4 years, it's going to be very interesting to see where college sports are.

Gotta say, Scheyer is taking over at a very challenging time. Not just following K but also in a world where his players are going to be making a ton of $$

Think Duke will have to fight to keep Whitehead in this class vs taking the G League money.

Why would you go to the GLeague at this point when you can make money and get a free education?
Either way, great week. Hopefully add another multiple year big man and guard.

In college you can get money and build your brand through exposure that you currently can't in the G league. If/when the G league starts having games featured at night on ESPN and other channels on a regular basis, then they will be more enticing. Currently (and with bias, admittedly), I don't think the G league competes with what Duke has to offer.

What is the level of coaching, training, and sports medicine care in the G League? What are the facilities like?

Or is that what the market demands in the new NIL world - when you are talking about top talent?

I get that 500K is a lot of money Chris. My thinking is that if the coaching and or training is inferior to that of the better high major programs, it would be a bad investment decision. Even more so with NIL money available.
