It will be interesting. I’m in the “trade down” school. The Eagles have cap sensitivities. Making 2 second round picks may help there, especially if guys are evenly graded from say 5 to 50 or 60.

Howie can worry about all the 2026 picks next year. Right now that’s a good situation to have.

The one exception is if a DT, Edge or CB they really like falls. But unlike last year, there won’t be enough QBs taken in round 1 for that to happen.
Never underestimate the number of 1st round reaches taken at the quarterback position by panicked GM's. They would never take a RB with a 3rd round grade in the first round, QB, however, ...

Davis's 5th-year option will guarantee him $12.9 M in 2026

Dotson's 5th-year option would have guaranteed him $16.8 M in 2026

Green's 5th-year option will guarantee him $16.7 M in 2026

Cine was released by the Vikings (the team that drafted him in the 1st round) prior to the start of the 2024 season. By being released before the 2024 season, he's ineligible for a 5th-year option. (He's the only player drafted in the 1st round of the 2022 draft that is ineligible for a 5th-year option.)

I didn't expect the Birds to pick up Dotson's option, and I don't expect them to pick up Green's. I go back-and-forth on whether or not it's in their best interests to pick up Davis's 5th-year option.
I think Davis is the only potential too and that may likely be driven by 1) them trading up to draft him and 2) the DT market being bonkers. $13M for a starting DT with upside is cheap.

The decision will likely be made after tomorrow. If a Nolen somehow falls to them, then that would change the calculus.

And there goes Starks to Baltimore. This is shaping up to be a dud for the Eagles.

I’m in the trade down camp at this point.

appears the Birds gave up a 5th round pick (they had 3) to Kansas City to move up 1 spot in R1

NFL Network reports that Howie tried to make a trade with the Chargers (#22 pick) so that he could get Jihaad Campbell, and they thought they had a deal. But the Chargers opted to not trade. Howie then tried to move up with several other teams after the Chargers, but couldn't make it work until they traded up 1 spot with the Chiefs

Interesting. So Campbell is who they wanted all along. I figured they’d go DB if no DLs fell.

🤷

It will be interesting to hear/read the inside story.

LBer seemed way down the list of needs on the roster.

FWIW, I think the last LBer the Birds drafted in the 1st round was Jerry Robinson, in 1979.

Yeah. Campbell seems to be athletic and versatile. We have to assume that Fangio played a role in this selection. Perhaps they see him stepping in for Dean first and then transitioning to more of an Edge role.

He’s long, fast and big. Those traits give them options. Not a bad draft pick.

But why trade up to 31 to take him? Chiefs were at 31 correct? They weren’t going to take him. I guess of course someone else could have traded w the chiefs. Idk

There is not much other explanation than this. They must have been aware that a team was trying to move up to get him. Howie hasn't always nailed his picks, but he seems to always make good trades so I trust him here.

My thoughts as well. I suspect they look at Campbell as Parsons type LB - more of an edge rusher (I guess like Abdul Carter as well). We know they wanted an edge rusher and don't value pure LBs highly in the draft.

It appears the draft with Atlanta involving the Birds' 3rd round pick was:

Atlanta gets:
- Eagles 3rd round pick (#96)

Eagles gets:
- Atlanta's 3rd round pick (#101)
- Atlanta's 2026 5th round pick
