This is Exhibit A for why a salary cap is needed in all leagues, and especially in the NHL, because these teams can't control themselves otherwise and would plunge themselves into bankruptcy if given the chance. It's absurd that a player like Carlsson, who's a good to very good player but definitely not a generational player, is going to be paid $18 million dollars. This contract definitely will negatively affect the Ducks because they won't be able to fit enough good players under the cap to become a legitimate contender, just when it seemed like they had turned the corner; the same would've happened to the Flyers if the Ducks had called their bluff. He's now the highest paid player in the league over players like McDavid, MacKinnon, Matthews, etc., which makes no sense.

Actually the Flyers would have been fine !

I really think that the Flyers had alterior motives to offer that deal, because that contract makes absolutely no sense for any team, especially in a salary cap league for a non-generational type player.
