it just has to be mental with Davis. he's got all the talent, just can't seem to focus enough to get it done.

Davis doing Davis things… he just seems all over the place
That pretty much says it all. He is his own worst enemy. Has a lot of talent, but puts himself in bad positions. He seems to lack upper body strength compared to the top competitors in his weight class. He needs to step up at NCAA’s as I doubt Barr will be able to go so PSU is going to lose 15 to 20 points Barr would get.

Byrd is a really good wrestler. Illinois with a strong showing this weekend. Good for them.

If anyone forgets, Illinois assistant Jeremy Hunter was a PA legend. He was a four time state champ out of McGuffey with a career record of 171-2 He made the NCAA finals in his last two years at PSU. Runner up Jr. year, champ Sr year with a 33-1 record.

I remember watching him dominate a tournament as a senior in high school.

I will be curious if Davis has a better national championship run. Hopefully he learned something from last year and will be peaking at the right time.
Well hope so. Many athletes get the “Yips” and its how and when you overcome them. Get the sense he’s got them and needs to work through them.

Good thing they have the Jedi master head coach.

141 3rd Place Match: #1 seed Beau Bartlett vs. #2 seed Jesse Mendez (Ohio State)

I'll use JM for Mendez

Most of us, and most wrestling journalists and fans, expected this to be the 1st place match.

Per 1
OOB, and a stall call on Mendez. Mendez working an underhook, they are on the edge, and Mendez drives Beau off and a stall call on Beau. Bartlett in on a single, but he loses the grip, they scramble, and a stalemate with 34 sec left. End

Per 2
Bartlett takes bottom. He's to his feet, but returned. He works up again, and is returned. Up again, and is returned again, and they go OOB with 1:30 left. JM throws in a boot, Beau works up, returned but he gets away on the return, 1-0. JM shoots, nothing. JM shoots again, Beau staves it off. End. RT @ 0:51 for JM

Per 3
JM takes bottom. He works up, Beau lifts him and they go OOB with 1:47 left. JM is out quickly on the restart, 1-1. RT not a factor (0:33 for JM). Beau shoots from centerfield, nothing. JM gets in on a head inside single, Beau steps over, then tries to work around, and he gets the TD, 4-1. 0:40 sec left. JM works up, then hits a roll, and they go OOB with 0:27 left. Challenge brick thrown by tOSU. They think JM got an esc (which it looked to me as if he may have gotten, though it wasn't awarded). Review is taking some time. This is really taking a long time. On replay, I can see why the ref didn't award it (he thought Beau had his hands locked and was above JM), but it really was close, as the review continues. No esc is confirmed. JM with a shoulder roll on the restart, but Beau stays with him. JM sits out and rolls and is away with 10 sec, 4-2. End.

With a 4-2 DEC, Beau takes 3rd place!!!
