157 Qtr: #1 seed Tyler Kasak vs. #8 seed Joey Blaze (Purdue)

I'll use JB for Blaze

Per 1
Kasak in on a leg on the edge, trying to drag JB back onto the mat, does so but JB throws in a whizzer, and then stopped with 2:15 left for PD (good call). Kasak gets behind and has a leg, again on the very edge, they scramble but Kasak with the TD, 3-0. OOB with 1:33 left. JB works up slowly, Kasak tries to lift, not so well, and JB turns out for the esc, 3-1. OOB with 1:03 left. JB again on the edge, and they go OOB with 27 sec. To nobody's surprise, they are again on the edge. End RT @ 27 sec for Kasak

Per 2
Kasak defers, and JB takes bottom. JB up, lifted, and they are OOB with 1:48 left. Caution on JB. JB works up, Kasak tries to trip down, but JB works out, 3-2. May have been a stall warning on Kasak in that sequence. RT @ 1:04 for Kasak. JB in on a low single, they scramble on the edge, and OOB with 1:06 left. Stall warning on JB. OOB with 20 sec left. End. RT @ 1:04 for kasak

Per 3
Kasak takes bottom. He works to a 4-pt stance, and then is out in 11 sec, 4-2. JB shoots, Kaska sprawls, they scramble, Kasak in good position but JB has a leg, and a TD for JB, 4-5. Kasak has to get OOB. He does, with 27 sec left. RT not a factor. kayak works up, returned and hits a roll, but JB stays with him. Kasak up, and returned and OOB with 1 sec left. Damn. kayak tries a roll, but the buzzer sounds. Ouch, I didn't see that happening. Kasak loses 4-5 to Joey Blaze.

Kasak will drop into the Consolations.

The QF are definitely not going the way I thought they'd go. Guys with tank issues and we usually do not have gas tank issues. Both LL and TK had nothing left to escape from bottom.

About as bad a start to the session as we could have.
Let's hope the last 5 wrestle the way they have all season. 7 into semis would still be quite the haul.
Worried about BD in wrestlebacks, but Luke and Kasak should be looking for bonus points in theirs.

Kasak not riding hard last match was a flag. He was gassed. Not sure.

Not the way Kasak wrestled most of the season. On this biggest stage it’s gonna be necessary to be aggressive early to advance.

Kasak looked gassed from the 2nd on. Not what we expect from this group. Davis was overmatched. Luke got outmuscled. Kasak was bad. Idk why he didnt just clear in the 3rd near the edge instead of initiating a scramble.
I agree. Kasak did not need to do that and didn’t wrestle smart.

From our perspective, I’m bit seeing the usual attacking mentality. Not sure what’s up.

On the other side, the refs aren’t forcing the action. It was particularly egregious in the Lilledahl match. Not one shot by Seymour in the first OT. He backed up continuously and just blocked and the refs kept the whistle in their pocket. Same thing in Van Ness’s match. Now we’re up to Messenbrink v. Amine and all Amine us doing is backing up and blocking. Just one stall call against Amine…ridiculous.

165 Qtr: #1 seed Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. #8 seed Cameron Amine (Okla St.)

I'll use CA for Amine

Could there be 2 more different styles in a match?

Per 1
Stoppage at 2:41 for interlocking fingers. Stoppage for injury for CA (something on his hand). Mitch shoots off the whistle, but nothing (stoppage for stalemate @ 2:19). Mitch chase CA off the edge and a stall warning on CA. Mitch shoots, nothing. CA likes the ear-to-ear. Stoppage for PD at 1:20 left. Mitch shoots, but they go OOB with 54 sec left (CA did counter on the shot). Stoppage for interlocking hands. Mitch in on a low single, but CA locks on a leg, and a stalemate with 26 sec left. Mitch shoots, nothing. End

Per 2
Mitch takes bottom. Mitch works up, but they go OOB with 1:51 left. Mitch works up again, returned, up again, and OOB with 1:32 left. Mitch to his feet, lifted, and he's away, 1-0. mItch shoots a low single, CA does a split, they are on the edge, Mitch pulls him back in and shelfs the leg, and gets the TD, 4-0. OOB with 33 sec left. End RT @ 3 sec for Mitch

Per 3
CA takes bottom. Caution on CA. CA works up, turns but Mitch has a leg, returned, and OOB with 1:36 left. Mitch with a good ride. In time, Mitch flattens CA. RT goes over 1 min. CA not doing much of anything. RT is locked. A rideout. With 2:03 in RT, it's a 5-0 DEC for Mitch.

Mesenbrink is in to the Semis

How the heck did Amine not get hit with multiple stalls
Exactly. All he did was back up in neutral and lay with his head on the mat for 2 minutes in the third with no stall calls. I don’t usually criticize the refs, but they need to step up their game.
