174 3rd Place Match: #2 seed Levi Haines vs. #11 seed Patrick Kennedy (Iowa)

I'll use PK for Kennedy

Picking this up in the 2nd period, with the score 7-2. (Haines with a 1st period TD, PK an esc, then Haines took bottom and escaped, then Haines with a TD, and PK with an esc). End

Per 3
PK takes bottom. PK sits out, Haines nearly pulls him back to the mat for points; eventually he flattens him. PK works up to his base. Haines throws in a boot. RT goes over 1 min for Haines. He needs a tilt for bonus points. 1 min left. Stalemate with 57 sec. PK turns and is away, 7-3. PK shoots and gets a leg, Haines with a body lock, they scramble, and Haines gets the TD, 10-3. End. With RT, it's a 11-3 MAJor for Levi Haines!!!!

He finishes in 3rd Place!!!!
I don’t understand why he didn’t wrestle Hamiti like this the way he did in the 3rd against Kennedy. Good for him to come back for 3rd. Hope he learned not to change his style. Burroughs was saying you have to ride to be great. So many kids these days don’t know how to do it. Haines knows how to do it but changed his tactic. Damn.

Tom - Thanks for all the hard scrambling to get the match reports to us for this session. Much appreciated.

I was thinking the same thing. They need to keep eating whatever they had for breakfast

Pinned Him.

I thought this was for Beau. At least from TV, it looked like Beau had it 3 or 4 times and ref kept moving in a different direction.
Yeah not sure how these refs decide what to look at he at least circled twice away from where the shoulders were going....and secondarily what is the 2nd ref watching for if he gets a view if anything the other guy doesn't see---does he get a chance to make the call? else why have a 2nd ref

I missed almost all of the match covering other matches, so I can't speak to whether I thought he was pinned or not.

I've mentioned before that it's not nearly as easy as you might think to anticipate where shoulders are going. And a lot of the time you are on the other side, checking for locked hands or other issues.

As for the 2nd ref, they absolutely can not make any calls. They offer verbal input (time left, if they go OOB when the main ref is looking at a potential pin, etc.), but can't blow their whistle, or make any calls. The closest they get to making a call is they can visually signal locked hands, but it's up to the main ref to actually call the illegal hold and award the point.
