Dombroski being interviewed. Says they wouldn't have given up two high prospects for a rental reliever. Also says they are done (unless something crazy is offered) shoring up the 'pen. Says they are still looking at other trade options.

Indicates they've been talking with Minnesota for quite some time. But that the trade really came into focus late this morning.

Says as of yesterday, a few clubs were still unsure if they were trading players or not.

Indicates the control aspect (Duran is controllable through 2027) was really big.

Says Duran is a legitimate closer (question is that Topper doesn't usually designate one closer).

Says Duran will be with the team for their next game on Friday.

(A quick summary of his speaking with reporters, where most of the time you couldn't hear the questions.)

Dom says they’re done searching for bullpen arms.
They should be. Duran is an alpha closer. They have a really deep bullpen once Alvarado and Nola come back. Walker, Ross, Banks as middle relievers. Kerk/ Strahm/Alvarado in the 7th/8th. Duran in the 9th. Romano DFA. That experiment was a failure.

If you get rid of Romano, who is the last bullpen spot? Agree he needs to go, but who takes JAs spot in the playoffs?.
They most likely won’t be going with a 5 man rotation so, whomever is left out of the starting rotation. Luzardo? Sanchez?

Edit: I forgot about Robertson.

This trade was solidified by them drafting a wheelbarrow of arms. I’m not crazy enough to think these guys are simply plug and play but you can only hope that one of them steps up and becomes the next Abel with a little development. Their #1 pick probably slots in as a Top 100 Baseball America prospect which puts him in the Abel neighborhood.

So you can then hope that you’re trading a catcher who is YEARS away for a critical piece for this year and beyond. They got the best bullpen arm who is controllable. This is a deal you HAD to make and it’s a home run. The only guy I would debate is at this level is Miller.

Agreed.

Miller is under team control thru 2029. The Athletics would be crazy, or have to be absolutely blown away by a package, to trade him.

I didn’t hear Dombrowski say anything about Miller. I am sure they talked and I’d be curious if he was told that Miller was not available or that he would only be available if Painter was included as the starting point. It seems pretty clear that Painter was not going to be moved. I’ll assume the Twins started with Painter as well since they had been talking for awhile.

This is exactly the type of trade that Dombrowski makes. I think they talk today to see if a bat falls into their lap. I’ve been a little different in that I am fine not getting power (Robert); I would be just as happy for length in the lineup. I’ve been curious about the Boston OF’er. Absent a trade, I would be surprised if Crawford isnt called up soon just to shake the lineup up a little.

With what they gave up for Duran, I’d be surprised if there’s another impact trade today for a bat. And if that’s the case, then bringing up Crawford feels logical. They just can’t expect much production from a rookie. It’s possible but not likely.

It would need to be someone that they could acquire with a lower level prospect. I don’t think Painter, Crawford, or Aiden Miller are going anywhere (obviously). Ozuna has lost playing time in ATL but I’m not sure I see the Braves trading with the Phillies.

They don’t have a great setup in the playoffs facing LHP with Kepler and Marsh. The NL will be a gauntlet in October. It would be nice to have a guy from the right side.

I do think that the Phillies wake up today being very happy that they got a hammer under control without having to give up any of their top 3 prospects.

In. That scenario I think Sosa will play LF as they had him do that a few times already. I’m also fine with Marsh, as he’s been good after that nightmarish first month or so. Kepler can ride pine or be DFA

A combo of the Padres really offering a lot (one of the guys -- I think De Vries -- in the trade is the #3 prospect in MLB), and the As being somewhat dumb. smh

It’s hard to argue with what the Phillies did. They added Robertson and Duran and a right handed OF which they desperately needed. Some will say you needed slug but outside of Suarez, not sure where you could have gone for it.

They did the above without dealing the guys they really didn’t want to deal.

The lineup construction will be for Thomson to figure out and it should allow them to introduce Crawford on the terms they want if they go that way in September. They get a little benefit by adding Luzardo as a lefty out of the pen in the playoffs to go along with Strahm so that their pen should not be as much a tightrope.

It’s on the big boys now to meet the challenge, Dombrowski did his part.

The stretch starts now.

Concur. Without knowing specifics about the players I’ve been around the block enough times to know when I’ve stepped in something.

I'm 100 percent on board with you. I think some had unreasonably, if not fantasy-level, expectations for what would happen at the deadline.

I also can't shake the idea of what could have possibly happened at the deadline if Abel and Tait could have been used in a trade package for an impact bat instead of a closer if Alvarado both did not get himself suspended and was pitching well enough to hold that closer role.

I’ve been driving down to OCMD all day. Wow. I didn’t see that De Vries went back to the A’s.

I like that trade for the A’s. Mason Miller has been awesome, no doubt, but he has some injury baggage and he’s still a reliever.

That’s why getting Duran for Tait and Abel was such a killer deal. Trading De Vries for a closer is similar to the Phils trading Painter.

Yeah, I like what Dom did. This season was always gonna fall on the guys making $20 million and up this season. It’ll be the same next year.

But I like what they did. The gaps they filled and the pieces they gave up look pretty good on paper.
