Oh boy, this could be the end for Wheeler. Same crap happened to Stephen Strasburg and Matt Harvey and they have not returned to a major league roster yet.

Both pitchers, especially strasburg had other significant injuries including thoracic outlet syndrome that shortened their careers. Entirely different situations.
You don’t know if that is what will
wind up with Wheeler (sure as heck hope not) Just like calf strains in the NFL/NBA, next thing you know it’s a popped Achilles.

Of course I don’t know if that is what will happen. I do know that those two pitchers are not good comps for the wheeler situation. For example, a summary of strasburg injury saga…

Stephen Strasburg's career was significantly impacted by injuries, particularly thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and related nerve issues. He also dealt with carpal tunnel neuritis, shoulder inflammation, and neck strain at various points. These injuries led to him missing significant time and ultimately contributed to his retirement.

Breakdown of Injuries:
    • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS):
This nerve and blood disorder involved surgery to remove a rib and neck muscles. Strasburg underwent this surgery in 2021, but it didn't fully resolve the issue.
    • Shoulder and Neck Issues:
He experienced shoulder inflammation and neck strain in 2021, which led to further time on the injured list.
    • Rib Injury:
In 2023, Strasburg was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his ribs, further hindering his ability to return to pitching.
    • Severe Nerve Damage:
Reports indicated that Strasburg was dealing with severe nerve damage, which contributed to his inability to rehabilitate and pitch.

Was hoping Nola could pick up the slack but he just blew up in the third inning!😩

Can they get two more outs! Good grief this bullpen is shite for the most part. Thomson has all the sense of a stone for pitching changes.

Starting pitching--a strength all season--seems to be unraveling down the stretch.
Hopefully, the Nola start was just a bump in the road back, but he does have a history of having a meltdown inning. Ranger has looked shaky recently. Sanchez still looks good and Luzardo is pitching better than his ERA tells. Crossing fingers that Wheeler issue is something that can be resolved somewhat quickly.

It won’t be quick or at all this season. He will be on blood thinners.

As WestsideLion said, we don’t know the exact diagnosis. Will he need a clot busting medication to break up a clot? Maybe? Will he need long term anticoagulants? Maybe? It must not be an emergency or he would have undergone a thrombectomy already. Again, we don’t know. No conclusions on my part, just hoping for the best.

Bohm didn’t take long to make his return felt. They likely don’t win today without him.

Nola was disappointing after months off. He fell into the same rut of getting knocked around there. By all accounts, he’s healthy. It must be between his ears.
After teams go through their lineup against him, they seem to get to him the second or third time through. I don’t have an explanation for it, but they seem to figure him out.

Not having JT behind the plate may have contributed too. Who knows? But Nola didn’t look like a guy who can be relied on in the postseason. Let’s hope he gets there.
