How are you feeling about Painter’s progress, @RyanSnyder and @MrTailgate ?

On the surface, I’d expect someone with Painter’s velocity to be more swing and miss.
I posted after seeing him a couple of times in Clearwater before he moved up to LV. At this point, it’s about getting him comfortable and getting into his routine. I posted that his secondary pitches needed work and it looks like he has ramped up usage of secondary pitches. Painter will not succeed this summer just pumping fastballs past MLB hitters.

Right now, they have to be happy. There have been no issues and he’s adjusting to pitching again. Stay the course. There are people we all know and when they speak you listen. One of them said he reminds him of Gerrit Cole. Multiple people have said he’s the best pitching prospect in the minor leagues. He has everything in place whether it be stuff, work ethic, maturity. He’s also got the frame to be physically dominant as he gets a bit older and fills out that frame.

Ideally, I’d not count on him in a meaningful way, I’d bring him along slowly and carefully. If that means he finds his way to the roster, so be it. If they pitch him through a full development year, I’m fine with that as well.

The one thing I think of at times is Doc. Doc had settled into a role where the young farm pitchers could sit with him and talk about preparing to be a professional even before talking about pitching. He was great and after the initial awe of the fact that it was Doc, he made a difference. I have thought of Painter and how he could have benefitted from that. Zach will be a great mentor to Painter. You never know but I’d be shocked if Painter is not a mainstay and horse for this team.

Fantastic stuff. Thanks!

Tough bottom of the 5th for the Phils only getting one. And then Ranger gives up a couple of cheap hits and a HR in the top of the 6th.

The Phillies bats have gone silent. Again.

Really nice game for Stott. I know he has struggled the past week or so, but love all the pitches he takes and works the counts.

But why pull him after 6 innings??

84 pitches, that's enough in your 1st MLB start. If he pitched another inning, he'd likely be in the 90s or 100s in terms of pitches thrown. That's pushing things unless you're used to doing that, against MLB batters.

The Pirates may not be an offensive juggernaut, but MLB hitters will adjust as they see a starting pitcher through multiple at-bats. The Fightins had a lead (only 1-0), against Skenes. Between the pitches thrown by Abel, and the Pirates having seen him through 2 at-bats, I think the odds of winning were not in the Fightin's favor to trot Abel out there in the 7th.

What a game today and win for Abel and the Phillies! I wonder if the Alvarado news will make them rethink Abel’s short stint?

Would Walker be better left in the bullpen and they can use Abel as fifth starter for a while?

TBH, I was bracing for a loss today. Skenes is a stud out there. Turns out Abel out studded him. Also, a game time of 1:59 was awesome.

Also, I’ve seen numerous articles lately about proposed trades with the Yankees which involve Bohm. With them needing help at third base and the Phils now with a hole in the bullpen, maybe a mutually beneficial deal will be worked out. Not that I want to see Bohm go but teams have to do what works for them.

Skenes is generational. Helluva player. I give Casty a lot of flak, but his heads-up base running got them the winning run.

I think Bohm is surplus because he’s in a contract year and they aren’t going to resign him. It’s Miller’s time soon and 3B is the only logical infield spot for several years.

I’ve also wondered if they’d consider moving Ranger depending on how Painter progresses. Nola’s struggles may change that calculus some. I can’t see them relying on two rookie pitchers if Nola isn’t right.

I’m all in on sending Bohm off for some pitching help. Let Sosa play third.
