Ouch! I didn't know there was a mercy rule.

I have a true story from when my son played youth football. There was a 40 pt mercy rule that said you forfeit the game if you win by more than 40 pts. This was obviously intended to keep teams from running up the score. My son's team had a huge halftime lead and played all the reserves in the second half. By the 4th quarter the coach told RBs to go 5 yds than go down because we couldn't score more points. The score was 39-0 and the opponent had the ball at mid field with only seconds remaining. Their coach called TO and told his QB to take the snap and run backwards through the end zone for a safety. Final score 41-0 and a forfeit.
