Love Bob Mould/Husker Du/Sugar, but don't think he/they will ever get a shot, unlike the Pixies who have an outside chance...

Siouxsie and the Banshees should also be in as they influenced New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, U2, Kim Deal, The Jesus and Mary Chain and many more.

Speaking of The Jesus and Mary Chain, always wondered why they didn't hit it bigger here in the States, but then again, there are many groups in the UK, Ireland, Australia, etc. who hit it big overseas who never really make an impact here.
Saw JMC and Psychedelic Furs together here summer 2024. Great combo.

This amused me…

If Iron Maiden get in, odds are fairly decent they won’t show. “I actually think the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an utter and complete load of bollocks, to be honest with you,” Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson said in 2018.“It’s run by a bunch of sanctimonious bloody Americans who wouldn’t know rock & roll if it hit them in the face. They need to stop taking Prozac and start drinking ******* beer.”

Yes, the bubble gum Beatles epitomized rock n roll. At its worst.

Pixies, Sonic Youth, Minor Threat/Fugazi, Joe Jackson, and Bob Mould/Husker Du/Sugar.
Let me elaborate. To me rock recordings are one thing, but the live shows are such a vital part. And I’m not talking just arena and stadium shows. I put Fugazi and Bob Mould in there because of their accessible ($5 Fugazi @9:30!), frequent shows in smaller venues that bring it. Pixies are sort of in between (little lower frequency and medium venues). All while putting out a solid class of music. In other words, they’re as big a part of rock as superstars and innovators, just in a different way.

I’d put Sonic Youth in because of their clever experimentation with distortion (not quite My Bloody Valentine), edge, and they were pretty accessible too. Joe Jackson wasn’t pure rock for very long, but damn he’s good.

Not as catchy/sexy, but really should just be called the Popular Music Hall of Fame; especially as rock has faded precipitously on the charts (can't even remember all the last band to hit it big), so going forward, won't be many bands to even be eligible to be nominated (unless you really hit the alternative scene).

Joy Division/NO should be in as they are one of the most influential post punk/new wave groups (have an identifiable sound, or should say sounds); most known for their club hits like Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle, but their more (bass and drum driven) post punk rock songs were better.

The Smiths should have gotten in already as well.

As a band that actually had a good bit of commercial success, INXS is underrated.

Never cared much for Collins or the post-Gabriel Genesis era, but that man was one of a number who dominated the airwaves during the 1980s-earky 1990s.

Yeah, Steppenwolf should be in - especially when bands like Kiss and Bon Jovi (2 of the most overrated bands by the public) are already enshrined.
Overrated based on what, the millions of albums they sold or all the sold out concerts they performed?

Phil Collins?!?!?! Good god, just host the doors now! I’d rather see Richard Marx go in!
Just because you don’t like a certain band or artist doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be in. I don’t like The Beatles, but I know they should be in the HOF.

I’ve seen Phil Collins. I’ve heard Phil Collins. Phil Collins is not the Beatles. In fact, his music is crap. Not that you can’t like it of course, but him getting into the rock and roll hall of fame would be miles worse than even Harold Baines getting into the baseball hall of fame.

Based on what other than your opinion? I guess it’s because he was only the third best selling artist of the 80’s (not even counting what he did with Genesis). Other than a few songs, I’m not a big Phil Collins fan, but if he can’t get in, then just about nobody should get in.

Knock agains Collins (and a ton of other acts) is - are they Rock and Roll? No, IMO he isn’t. He’s pop/Top40 music. He has a good number of bonafides though - Songwriter Hall of Fame, 8 Grammys, an Oscar, and tons of hits. Really should be the Music Hall of Fame and you can end these debates. Mariah Carey isn’t R&R but she’s almost certainly gonna get in.

By what measure is Phil Collins music "crap"?

In fact, I would like to know, other than opinion, what makes music good or bad?

Rock and Roll is so hard to define though. The line between pop and rock and roll is paint brush wide, not fine point fountain pen wide.

Sure, you can look at say a Britney Spears and say pop all the way, but Phil Collins? Not so easily categorized.

A lot of good rock songs ended up as top 40 songs.

Well Sussudio is pretty craptastic but then he's had enough good stuff to offset that one. 🤷‍♂️

+100. We've, not you and I but this topic has really been beaten to death and just last week.
Look I get that people dont like Sheryl Crow or Wu Tang Clan being in the RRHOF but at what point do we draw a line and say Ok, this is the RRHOF and this is the Country Music hall of fame and this is the Punk HOF and this is the Alternative HOF and this is the Blues HOF... and so on for every genre.
It is what it is...an all encompassing Building.
as John Lennon sang...It's nothing to get hung about".

It’s much like if there was a beer hall of fame…most of the microbrews and IPA’s that beer snobs like so much wouldn’t get in, but Budweiser would.

sheryl crow (Some pumpkin infused unfiltered IPA) would still get in.

You have a great idea though. Classify bands/acts as either rock and roll or not, then count up the records they sold - Like InBev does at the end of the quarter. Start from the top and start asking yourself why these bands weren't worthy of our HOF, when they were so insanely popular in a crowded market of music?

Sure, but other than the insipid lyrics and that punchable Gerber Baby face, what makes it suck?

Played around the C mixolydian scale which is quite common in rock and blues, with a pretty standard beat and rhythm.

I mean, I don't like the tune, but its hard to say a song that hit #1 on billboard is craptastic.

Speaking of which, anyone know anything about our former Board Brother-in-Arms, the poster known as Mixolydian?

I’m all for not putting country artists or rap artists in the R&R HOF, but since they’re already doing it, I guess that ship has sailed.
