first 2 bands that come to mind are Grateful Dead and Phish. I don't think the Dead had a top 10 song until the 80's and Touch of Grey. And very few bought Dead records they traded their recordings back and forth from bootleg concerts.

I like Grateful Dead. Terrapin Statin and Blues for Allah are my gems and always on my rotation. I know very little of Phish only a few songs, I wont change the channel if they pop up.

Nahh you don't have to go that far just look for music stations on any streaming service. Yep its really that easy.
Oh and what was 80's alternative is now often considered "classic".
