In watching some of the NCAA men's baseball tournament, I know MLB goes by analytics and not giving up outs and swinging for the fences, but I love watching small ball and sacrifice bunts and moving runners up 90 feet into scoring position. To me, that's great baseball.

From what I could tell looking it up, Penn State's never made the tournament. :-(

You really want to make that claim? I knew it was incorrect, and in less than a minute found the details. PSU has made the NCAA baseball tournament 17 times, and made it to the College World Series 5 times.

My bad. I used this link:

but didn't go further:

Are you seeing any NCAA tournaments since 2000?

No, 2000 was the last year they made the NCAAs.

Since then, the only years they've had winning records are:

2001: 15-11
2003: 17-15
2004: 17-15
2007: 20-10
2008: 17-15
2012: 15-9
2025: 33-23
Crazy to see how many more games they play now.

Small ball is all I know.

Overall #1 Vanderbilt goes down to Wright State, 4-5, eliminated. The final out came with men on second and third. Rough.

Wright State University Raiders in Fairborn, OH (Dayton, OH burb). They play in the Horizon League. They have often been in the NCAA tourney. Their former long time manager also managed at PSU (name escapes me). Didn't have a very good run @ PSU, still recognized as a good manager. Wasn't able to bring in the higher caliber players to PSU that AD thought when he was hired.

Actually, Wright State was up 1-5 with two out in the ninth and then all of a sudden it was 4-5. Dang. Wright State got eliminated later last night, forget who beat them.

Bummer for Wright State. They have a solid baseball program.

I coached against the kid who started for Duke last night. He was a stud as a freshman in HS, MD state player of the year last year. We had good teams so we faced him every time we played them, he was 4-1 against us with a sub 1.5 ERA and about 40 K's in 30 innings.

After that first inning he got in a groove and was lights out, kind of surprised coach didnt let him go one more. As soon as he came out of the game I started to root for Murray St though.

It was a good game. Murray State could have really broken the game open in the 8th inning except they kept swinging at balls two feet out of the strike zone. Kids having fun, kids celebrating, kids mourning their loss.

I thought for sure that after the excitement of thinking they won but then having the overturned DP from replay, that Murray St was going to give up a hit and somehow give up the tying run.

Coastal Carolina is in the best-of-three final.

Right now, it’s Arkansas 1-0 LSU in the 5th. It’s win or go home for Arkansas. If LSU loses tonight then the rubber match is tomorrow at 7.

Arkansas went for a force at third instead of a trying for a double play that would have ended the game. LSU eventually wins. Dang, the kid will remember this for a long time.

LSU-Coastal Carolina game 2 has just started. LSU playing for the championship, CC playing to force a game 3 of 3.

Coastal Carolina has had 178 batters hit by pitch in 67 games. Those kids are trained not to flinch.

CC head coach and 1st base coach tossed in bottom of first. Seems to be due to a look at me home plate umpire.

Just watched it. That’s an easy ejection. First base coach arguing balls and strikes, so you give the team a warning. Head coach then comes out after receiving the warning and holds up 3 fingers telling him he’s missed 3 pitches already…that’s an obvious spot to toss him. How do you put that on the ump?

I've been going to AAA games this year, and I'll admit I like the new balls and strikes challenge. Was watching an MLB game last night and saw a pitch that clearly woud be overturned. And it doesn't take long and you have a limited number of challenges.

The funny thing is that had Coastal Carolina challenged it, I’m reasonably sure it would have been a strike.

I put it on the ump because I was ignorant of the rules and the talking heads, seemingly identically ignorant of said rules, themselves put it on the ump.

They gave us the “it’s too big of a game to toss the coach there”. It reminds me of the “you can’t call a foul/penalty there” late in a close game, like the rules should suddenly change.

That’s on the coach for getting himself tossed in that spot…and I applaud the umpire for having the guts to toss him in a spot that he crossed the line, regardless of the situation.
