Does the fan vote have any meaningful impact on the outcome? I know the winner gets 5 first place votes, but without knowing how many total votes are possible (and any um ... "discretionary weighting" by Win Mag), that number is kinda meaningless.

Besides, I read somewhere that Tom Ryan already had a likeness of the trophy made and awarded it to Jesse Mendez as undeniably the most deserving wrestler. To avoid any trademark issues TaTo is calling it the "Hodgepodge" award, which he explained is even more prestigious than the Hodge because it recognizes that Jesse's skills and accomplishments are so expansive that they defy conventional definition or measurement. Reportedly it's on display in the OHST room already.
Right next to Jesse's 3rd national championship picture?

Two more for Mitchell, but don’t see the fan vote happening. Not with the Lion hate and Jax winning a natty as a damn grade schooler (by the time the hype machine stalls out). Starting 5 back may’ve mattered. Until Saturday night.
Enter the smiling assassin. Sergio has no chance, but gave Mitchell his only one, taking out Jesse. Even small, spiteful men seeking to punish Penn State won’t be able to. Not with the next dominant wrestler being Josh. Not with the singing assassin roadkilling his Semi and Final opponents. Barring straight-up corruption, this ain’t close. Mitchell in a landslide.
Wrestling gods appeased.
The hate is real and not just with the fans.

I was very happy to see Mendez lose in the finals and "disqualify" himself for the Hodge. Seems to me OSU and Mendez himself were appointing him the winner before all the matches were wrestled. Their arrogance was grating. If you talk the talk you better be sure you can walk the walk.
The other talking heads were doing it too even in the face of Mitchell having better stats. It was setting up to be a farce. His losing saved the committee from itself

It sounds like the vote may be tightening due to fanboying for Jax - I can’t confirm because votes won’t be updated until 5:00, but this was mentioned on Intermat.

I usually don’t care too much for fan votes and ignore pleas from Penn Staters to vote for undeserving guys just because they play, wrestle, etc for us, but Mesenbrink is a stone cold deserved winner of this trophy and deserves to have the full weight of our fanbase vote for him.

@Tom McAndrew - any way you can do a duplicate post on your namesake board? I know you like to segregate the board topics, so I don’t want to step on toes, but a lot of those troglodytes don’t visit this board

Frankly I think the Hodge cost Jesse the finals. He JUST HAD to win with a takedown when he could have easily held down Vega for 30 seconds and got out for the ride outs win.
Lol, right up there with Ryder Athleticism unless sarcasm.

I'm sure that during SV of the national finals, Mendez asked himself what he needed to do to win the Hodge.

I just looked it up. Last year Hendrickson had 30 total votes, CStar had 26. So without the fan vote, Carter would have won, or if they would have split the fan vote proportionally rather than 5-0, Carter would have finished with 28.25 and Hendrickson with 27.75. (Hendrickson had 48.5, Carter, 39.8)

Carter is really the only wrestler in history where sportsmanship actually factored in. He was not likeable bottom line. I think the past Hodge winners and media members put that aside for the most part but it absolutely swung fan votes.

Carter is one of those guys who you love.. or at least are amused by, when he’s on your team… but you hate him if he’s on the other side… as my dad described Pete Rose

Didn’t Hendrickson have more pins and a higher bonus rate than Carter?

Yes and no. Hendrickson had 13 pints to Starocci's 6, but Starocci had an 85% bonus rate to Hendrickson's 81%. Hendrickson's dominance score was also a lot higher (5.15 to 4.77).
Thanks. I thought Hendrickson was higher in two of the stats. I don’t think that Hendrickson winning was the crime that many PSU fans make it out to be.

Since they took career achievement away as a component, I agreed with the vote as well.

Making the vote this year what should be a Mesenbrink landslide absent shenanigans. Jax might get a few Ok State homer votes and DT’s 2, but that’s all he should get.
