The whole Dophins/McDaniel situation was strange. There were rumors about McDaniel possibly being let go all season. And then, the Dolphins let go of their GM, but kept McDaniel. In most organizations, the GM likes to have "their" guy as the coach, so the entire process seemed backward. And then, the Dolphins released McDaniel.
