Bruton, which plays in Class 2 — the second-smallest of six
Virginia High School League classifications — will play four of its nine district games against the Bay Rivers District’s other smallest schools: Class 2 Poquoson and Class 3 New Kent, York and Tabb. It will also play its non-district season opener, scheduled for Aug. 31, at home against Class 2 King William.
The Panthers will not play their five scheduled games against the Bay Rivers’ largest, Class 4, schools: Grafton, Jamestown, Lafayette, Smithfield and Warhill. That leaves those schools with three options — they can count the game as a forfeit victory, as a non-game (giving them nine games for VHSL playoff ratings), or they can schedule another game.
Jamestown football coach Michael Murphy said his team will take the forfeit win. Lafayette coach Andy Linn and Smithfield coach Mike Newhall said they are looking at the possibility of scheduling another opponent.
“If you play only nine games and win them all, you’re fine, but if you lose one of them, it can be tough,” Linn said, referring to the mathematics of VHSL power ratings. “If we can get a game, we’re going to play a game.”
Bruton becomes one of four VHSL schools to make a major change this season because of low participation numbers. Charles City will not field a football team at all this season, while Manassas Park and Park View of Sterling will play only on the junior-varsity level.
