How does this system determine how much Team A will beat Team B by when there are no common opponents? I don’t have a problem with Tarboro being favored to beat Murphy (they should be favored), I just think 22 points is a little much and maybe even borderline disrespectful to a proud program like Murphy, which has 10 state titles to it’s name. Now these two teams may play and Tarboro may win by more than 22, but I just think that, going into the game, the spread should be much smaller. Murphy ain’t chopped liver and they would not be shocked by Tarboro’s athleticism, size, and speed after having played the likes of Heard County GA and AC Reynolds.
I hope I don’t upset anyone by saying this. Murphy is a proud program and they have good reason to be. But pride is backward looking. Pride gets those players nothing on Friday night. It’s hunger that makes the difference. How hungry were you lifting weights in the spring? How hungry were you conditioning yourself for the season ahead? There will always be pundits that doubt you. Is Tarboro 22 points better than Murphy? Not until they line up and play the game. If you believe it badly enough, the hunger will get you there. There are less talented teams that have ended Tarboro’s state championship dreams in the last 10 years. Pride comes before the fall. On those occasions, the hungrier team prevailed.
