So Time Warner now offers 300mbps service in Lexington. I upgraded my modem a while back to one that is rated at 343 mbps, but I'm not getting close to this speed. Like maybe 60-70 mbps. It's an Arris sb6181 and nighthawk router.

Time Warner is blaming the modem, stating its only approved for 100mbps. Arris, the modem company, is blaming Time Warner for not having the right software to correctly utilize the modems 8 channels.

So, who's full of ****?

No, just on an app on my iPhone.

Still don't really understand why something that supposed to go 343, time warner only approves for 100.

I'm not a gamer, really just surf the web and stream Netflix and such...it's really just more the principle about why something isn't doing what it's supposed to...

TWC has a list of approved modems for each speed range. You're pretty much SOL if it's not on the list for the speed you desire. My old modem would do 200 but TWC limited it to 50.

You need 16 to get 300 with TWC.

I fought this battle already. No way around it unless TWC opens up to 8.

You should be getting at least 100 tho. I'd also consider just dropping your service down to the 100 level, it will be much cheaper. Unless you want to buy a new 16x8 modem.

BTW, you do need to test it over hardwire. You are going to lose bandwidth over your iPhone. If you want to get in a pissing contest with TWC, this is what they will make you do and will base your level of service on.

I'm supposed to be able to get 300 also Dr. I just checked and it's running at 8.5, but, my upload is running at 11.5. Sounds right, I talk faster than I listen.

Guess you haven't read the stories about how Google Fiber isn't making money like they thought it's taken more time and effort than they realized and they might not continue expansion.

Just checked it with Time Warner and it was 18.47 down and 22.24 up. Pisses me off when I have to wait .7 seconds for something that should only take .3. Who's got the time for that ****?

They're supposedly doing fiber in a limited area over in Hamburg, Boat. I haven't used it but I've heard one or two people who have said it's good. Just make sure they can really provide it to your house. They're bad about sending out offers to people who aren't actually in their service area for certain services.

No need to brag man. I watch the news and I'm pretty close to reaching the optimum time of 15 seconds per encounter. I'm good enough, and doggone it, people like me.

I have one of those Arris routers running with my Netgear Nighthawk wireless router. Did you get them to disable the wifi on their modem? That is supposed to make your router work more efficiently. How are you checking your speed? I use speedtest.net and noticed I got a huge range of speeds based on the server I was using. I use to get 200+ mbps before I lowered my internet down to save money to the 50 mbps range. Got tired of my bill jumping from $90 to $160 and dropped everything but the slower internet that works just fine.

Some servers would only hit like 70 while I could get others to hit 230. That was using my phone. Also my laptop would never get over 100 no matter what server I used. I found out it was so old that the ethernet adapter was only capable of 100. I also would only get like 70 something with my Xbox One. The problem with that is you have to use the servers in Washington state and that keeps you from getting as good of a speed if you live around Kentucky.

It is such a headache as well trying to deal with people in India to solve a problem 8,000 miles away. First you have a guy calling himself Bobby trying to talk you through your problem with such a bad Indian accent that you constantly have to say what over and over? Cut the crap Kumar we know that isn't your name. Then we wait on them to say we don't see a problem on our end after having you reset your modern and router. You ask for a technician to come by and check it out and they set it up only to call back later and said there is no problem and they cancel your technician's service run. I have a Time Warner facility about 2 miles from my house, but have to deal with "Bobby" instead of sending someone 5 minutes away to do a 15 minute check of my system. That is why it is such a hassle getting anything fixed if God forbid you have a problem with a service in your house.

So funny and also true while dealing with some people. My internet is not the fastest and is total crap, but it does work and i get done what i need done. If it means i have to wait a couple of seconds more for something to download, or wait a second more for a page to load, so be it. Being online can be so expensive and i am not about to make it even more so.

Can you put the right modem number. I cant find a surf board 6181. There is 6141 which is what I think you mean, but then there is the 6183, which is faster.

Its your modem if that is the case of being 6141. 6141 cant operate faster than 100 mbps on TWC's network (at least in Louisville), or its supposedly cant.

You need to unplug your router, and hardwire directly from your laptop/computer to your modem. Clear your browser, restart computer, unplug modem for 30s. Then go to speed test. (speedtest.net) Report findings here.

Make sure you have a good ethernet cable. This could be your other issue. ****** cables can reduce speed. This rules out interference with router, reduces variables.

The other issue could just be your lines (the coaixal cables) You should have a tech come out and run a line test. They will try and charge you, just throw a fit, that there is a disagreement, and you need to rule out line interference. It could be a tap or connection isnt tight, which can cause noise. Ask the tech on phone if they can see the line strength, i.e. db loss. If high, its interference).

If the speedtest comes back strong, with router out of equation, then it could be an issue of something causing signal loss with wifi (this is a lot of things from devices, to router channels).

Also, besides it just being nice to have, why do you need 300 mbps? If its I watch a lot of porn or kids, etc, then whatever, what I am getting at, is you may not need 300, and may be over paying for something you wont use. Streaming netflix at HD takes 30 mbps. Streaming stuff maybe 10-30. You would have to stream HD on 6 tvs plus have 5-10 iphones and ipads to even think of getting close to using that much speed. I would suggest just go down to the 100 or even 50 and problem solved.

If you do want all that speed and its what you need, upgrade the modem. You have a really good router (depending on which grade, but even lowest one is good).

The 6183 should get up to 300, but thats the cap for that modem on TWC network.

Your ethernet port on your PC/laptop needs to be gigabit, otherwise you're maxed at 100mb. So just hardwiring your router to test the speed may not yield better results.

You need the SB6183 or 6190 to maximize TWC speeds.

I have a similar issue. The modem is rated at 150mbps but Time Warner says this modem is only good for 50mbps. I've speedtested in the low to mid 60s, only got 48 just now when I tested.

I did mistype the router, it is the 6141.

Did upgrade the Ethernet cable to cat6, seems a bit faster now. I think 100mbps should/currently does serve my needs.

Thank you all for your input, Wildcat friends.

The important thing about buying a new cable modem now is that it be DOCSIS 3.0 certified. (The very newest standard is 3.1). This gives you multi-channel bonding, increased performance, and potentially future-proofs you when your cable ISP offers higher speed plans.

I replaced my sister's TimeWarner cable modem in Lexington with this one a while back. Beats paying $10 a month renting the TimeWarner modem.

Motorola MB-7420

Read reviews. There are probably better choices now. You may want one with a built in gateway if you don't have a separate router in the house.

I had this exact same problem with TWC, although with a lower speed tier here. After having a tech come out for several hours and test everything in the world, having the line replaced, and too many conversations, I finally asked for Tier 1 Support. That guy told me that my modem, the exact one you have, caused a lot of problems even though it is on TWC's approved modem list. Essentially, he said try using one of the TWC modem/routers, and it should work just fine. I didn't want to do this, because I was pretty sure it was ********. I tried it anyway, and it worked. After all of that ********, all I had to do was rent one of TWC's modem/routers to get the speed I was paying for. It still kind of pisses me off that I have to rent a modem to get the speed I'm paying for, but whatever, it works now and I'm tired of dealing with it.

I originally was using a TWC modem/router when I bought the house 2 years ago. That thing was slow and put out a weak signal that wasn't covering the house. So I got a nighthawk router which has worked great since. Had to get a new modem with it...

This thread has been helpful for understanding what the problem is. Listening to ARRIS and TWC point the finger at each other was pissing me off.

100 mbps is fine for me right now. I wasn't really having issues, other than understanding why I wasn't getting 300.

Probably because they are lazy stupid ********, Kook.

Phone techs, well, it's their primary goal to get you off of the phone as quickly as possible at any cost. "Steve" will "open a ticket for this issue", which means he's playing DOTA 2 on his secondary monitor and listening to Bilal Saeed through his back channel chinamen manufactured Beats by Dre.

I like to play that game though. Sometimes. See how far down the hole I can get...and what lies waiting for me there.

You might say, argubs, that's a shocking display of idiocy...what kind of a goddamn nerd are you?

And I would say...a persistent one.

Yeah, if I don't get what I need I usually ask for a supervisor. Twice in my recent dealings they had to take a message because one wasn't there...once they did call back, from Arris.

Did I ever tell the paddock about the time the CEO of my ISP helped me trouble shoot my service disruption since his customer service guy was out sick?
