So Time Warner now offers 300mbps service in Lexington. I upgraded my modem a while back to one that is rated at 343 mbps, but I'm not getting close to this speed. Like maybe 60-70 mbps. It's an Arris sb6181 and nighthawk router.
Time Warner is blaming the modem, stating its only approved for 100mbps. Arris, the modem company, is blaming Time Warner for not having the right software to correctly utilize the modems 8 channels.
So, who's full of ****?
Can you put the right modem number. I cant find a surf board 6181. There is 6141 which is what I think you mean, but then there is the 6183, which is faster.
Its your modem if that is the case of being 6141. 6141 cant operate faster than 100 mbps on TWC's network (at least in Louisville), or its supposedly cant.
You need to unplug your router, and hardwire directly from your laptop/computer to your modem. Clear your browser, restart computer, unplug modem for 30s. Then go to speed test. (speedtest.net) Report findings here.
Make sure you have a good ethernet cable. This could be your other issue. ****** cables can reduce speed. This rules out interference with router, reduces variables.
The other issue could just be your lines (the coaixal cables) You should have a tech come out and run a line test. They will try and charge you, just throw a fit, that there is a disagreement, and you need to rule out line interference. It could be a tap or connection isnt tight, which can cause noise. Ask the tech on phone if they can see the line strength, i.e. db loss. If high, its interference).
If the speedtest comes back strong, with router out of equation, then it could be an issue of something causing signal loss with wifi (this is a lot of things from devices, to router channels).
Also, besides it just being nice to have, why do you need 300 mbps? If its I watch a lot of porn or kids, etc, then whatever, what I am getting at, is you may not need 300, and may be over paying for something you wont use. Streaming netflix at HD takes 30 mbps. Streaming stuff maybe 10-30. You would have to stream HD on 6 tvs plus have 5-10 iphones and ipads to even think of getting close to using that much speed. I would suggest just go down to the 100 or even 50 and problem solved.
If you do want all that speed and its what you need, upgrade the modem. You have a really good router (depending on which grade, but even lowest one is good).
The 6183 should get up to 300, but thats the cap for that modem on TWC network.
