3rd grade basketball tip request

I coach a 3rd grade basketball team, we have a pretty good team and getting ready to take on the top team. The other team is pretty fast to the ball. The defense they play is 3 up on the half court line (that's the closest they play, no press), with 2 behind watching for an overhead pass. Any ideas how to break this? We haven't evolved much to setting picks, but worked on it some. I'm hoping for some ideas.

Sounds to me like you may need to step up your recruiting game. Don't quote this post and I'll erase it after you've seen it. Can't be too careful nowadays. The next time you have young recruits in for a visit, maybe hire someone to amp up the atmosphere, you know, give them a little sumpin sumpin to remember you by. I would go for a clown. If you're sure about security, go for a clown that does magic tricks. By next year, some guy will be on here asking us how to prepare for you.

Just have one of your kids take off dribbling as fast and hard as he can through one of the gaps, an 8 year old isn't going to slide over and take a charge.

Then tell the other coach to quit being a ***** and teach his kids real defense instead of something that only works in certain leagues. He's only hurting his players.

This is great thanks!

Fleming- excellent info thanks!

Ymmnot- I've recruited a few seasons, offering some shiny new bikes, I will neither confirm nor deny this happened, Larry Brown said I was solid. Actually, I have the team I love, I wouldn't get rid of any of them.

William- I thought about this too, set the tone from from get go, ram it down their throat and see who would take the charge. I have a girl that had to be taken out of wrestling because she was body slamming boys at school, she'd be good for this.

Keep the tips coming!

One mechanical thing to coach is to stay in the middle of the floor. The temptation is to get to the sideline, but that's where the trap lies. In the middle of the court even if you have to pick your dribble up it is easier to pass.

Seems like a ridiculously easy "press" to break as you can simply split a pass between the three defenders or simply have someone set a ballscreen on the side for your main ballhandler and then have the screener immediately roll out to receive the pass and set up the offense.

You'll probably even have a guy open on the backside if the guy who rolls out for the pass tries to take it in (instead of pulling it out to set up the o) and the defenders inevitably try to close in on the ball handler.

Another one we did when we coached middle school basketball was overload one side when a team wanted to play a specific zone because kids at that level have no idea what to do at this point nor does the opposing coach know what to say to them. They will eventually come out of their zone because it doesn't make sense at that point.

Splitting the pass hasn't worked well in the past, they are fast enough to deflect it when the guard tries to pass over the first line. Good idea about overloading one side though, I may try that. I've been too focused on spreading them out. Another I thought after reading this, using ol Shooters picket fence with three girls, have the guard dribble around with a quick pass to our center for a quick shot.

Maybe even consider having two or three players come up for back screens on the three players at half court.

The fact you are coaching a 3rd grade basketball team during football and soccer season t.ells me you are already taking it too seriously, Your kids are probably mostly white, won't be able to jump as well as Rex Chapman, won't grow to more than 6'1. Transy calls these kids power forwards. Good luck shattering their dreams.

I gotta say, it is strange to be coaching basketball during this part of the year. Is it AAU or something?

In my area, rec leagues play year round (winter, spring, summer, fall) seasons for basketball and soccer. Other sports are more seasonal. I coach my daughters basketball and team manage my sons soccer. We've accumulated a regular group of girls that play together, and want to play year round. As long as she wants to keep playing, I'll keep coaching them.

So no press but a 3-2 zone is ok in 3rd grade? Which is essentially what they are doing. I'd think that if no zone is allowed id just run everyone to the baseline under your basket, forcing them to guard away from center court, and let my best ball handler go one on one to bring the ball up.

I would suggest finding a league that doesnt restrict you from pressing. Let your kids play against older kids so they get better instead of babying them to death.
