Nick Saban is the best college football coach to ever be in the game. Bryant's time was a different game and nothing compared to what Saban has accomplished at Bama plus his LSU ring.

First name greatest. Last name ever.

Nick Saban.

Was just about to start a thread on this ... how insane is that? One of the greatest coaches in college football history.

And he needed a 76 yard Hail Mary on the last play of the game to beat UK.

And he continues to do it with average QBs. Mind boggling. I guess when you stockpile that much talent, it can be done.

I'd say he's probably the greatest coach in college football history. And I can't stand him or Bama.

Still going with Bear Bryant as the G.O.A.T. due to longevity, huge win total and the extra title. I will say that Saben's last ten years have been been the best decade ever for a coach.

Can't argue with the more wins and his lasting power, but some of those titles are pretty questionable, aren't they? If you are voted number 1 after the reg season and then lose your bowl game, you shouldn't be claiming a title.

The big knock on Saban, of course, is that he only had 1 undefeated season among the 4 titles (I think). He slipped into one or more title games.

Saban has 5 legit undisputed titles. Bryant has a couple that are not realy 100% legit. That said, gotta respect that opinion.

Yeah, he has 1 out of 5 undefeated (2009 went 14-0) but going 14-1 this year is more impressive to me than Bear going 11-0 in the 60s. As we have discussed, much harder to win in today's games and you play a SEC Title game now and then have to win TWO "bowl games" to win the title? I just think it is so hard to go undefeated in the SEC Today. I think it is more impressive Bama and AU went 14-0 back to back years in 09 and 2010...still shocked that happened.

Good points. Must be nice to be a fan of a school with 2 coaches who are considered the best of all time.

That is something that is pretty interesting. Despite all the amazing recruiting classes he has still not been able to bring in a quarterback that we'd consider top flight. In fact, he hasn't brought in a single 5 star quarterback since he's been at Alabama. Most of his quarterbacks have actually been 3 star recruits.

There was a time people would comment/argue Saban was to college football what Calipari was to college basketball. That was about 4 Saban National Championships ago, don't hear that anymore.

He good. I find the QB comment interesting too. They can overcome average quarterbacks because of their other pieces. Saban is a living legend.

Actually he's brought in a 4* QB in each of the last 4 years. Simms and McCarron were also 4* guys. But his MO is a strong running game and great WRs and QBs that don't lose games.

I was looking at the total numbers. He's brought in:

Nick Fanuzzi ***
Phillip Ely ***
Parker McLeod ***
Brad Smelley ***
Alec Morris ***
Star Jackson ****
Cooper Bateman ****
Phillip Sims ****
AJ McCarron ****
David Cornwell ****
Blake Barnett ****

So, until this year he had brought in the same amount of 3 star quarterbacks as opposed to 4 or 5 star guys. If I had to guess it is probably the position with the most, or one of the most, 3 star recruits for Saban. That kind of surprised me. Also, just that they have never really had that quarterback that everyone felt was amazing. They've all, regardless of their star rating, all kind of been the game manager type.

Seems the game manager type is what he prefers, it's working pretty good for him! Of course, there are few 5* players and even fewer 5* QBs.

Actually, LSU and Saban won the BCS title, whereas USC won the AP title, so one can be disputed a little. I know I'm splitting hairs here.

Yea, that seems to be the case. Goes to show you that the most important position/group is the offensive line.

I think I'd throw Bowden's 14 straight top 5 finishes with 2 titles and at least 2 more played for with Saban's record. Saban has more titles but he hasn't strung together that many top 5 finishes consecutively. I'd take either one at UK....
