I believe the biggest reasons are that if you get a stop on the initial drive, your starting point is typically better than it would be than it would be if you take the opening kick. A typical kickoff will travel 60 to 65 yards, the average punt does not. Also, getting the 2nd half kick will allow you to typically have more possessions in the 2nd half when the game should be/ could be on the line.
