I never advocate benching AMart for the season, but sometimes I don't think it would be inappropriate to give Vedral a series to calm Martinez down. So far this year he seems to get wound up really tight sometimes.

I wasn’t bagging on Martinez on here, but to be fair: he made some bad decisions, had some bad reads, he had the fumble to start the game. Martinez played far from perfect, but at the end of the day he got the job done. Period.

One thing I noticed going through the game thread is how pathetic some guys are. Its like they don't come out except to show how $#!++¥ of an attitude they have, and to see how toxic of an atmosphere the can create.

Absolutely. I get frustrated too, but the amount of irrational knee jerk posts on here after bad plays is too damn high.

Agreed. It’s why I refuse to get on this board during the game. I’ll wait till afterwards and stop by.

I think there’s something going on that’s limiting him (more coaching than anything physical), but in the second half they seemed to relax a bit and that’s the AM I’ve been hoping for

The smart thing to do, but sometimes I can’t help drifting over here during commercials or what not. I must be a masochist.

There's no doubt in my mind that when a couple of these guys started going down, the staff cut Martinez loose. He didn't seem as over coached. Wandale, Mills, and Martinez really ran the ball well down the stretch tonight, nice three-headed attack that complemented each other well. I think its easy to dismiss Martinez tonight due to Wandale's coming out party... Heaven forbid if Wandale were to have a bad game next week, mother truckers around here will be calling for him to be benched as well.

I do wish Washington wouldn’t have gotten hurt the first half. He had almost 100 yards rushing in the first half alone. Maurice Washington was absolutely tearing them apart. I’d loved to see how he’d finished if he didn’t get hurt on the first play of the game.

Martinez has some serious issues going on. I don't care about his stats. He made some very poor plays in this game. This is one of the worst teams in the Big Ten. He has played scared 75 percent of the time this year, and I don't understand it. Don't praise his play. He has not looked like a future first rounder or a Heisman winner should look. I hope he figures it out, because it gets real from here on out.

And he’s a mere sophomore. He will be fine. And I’ll gladly praise his play. He’s up and down, agreed. But when he goes 64% for 450 total yards and 3 TDs. I’ll absolutely praise that.

The calls to bench Martinez and the toxic negativity were a bit much for me.
Bench for the game? No. Bench him for a series to send him a message to pull his head out of his ***? Your'e damn right. He should have sat out a series.

Lol, He had a good night passing, led the team in rushing yards, and made big plays down the stretch. But we can't praise him because he didn't look like a future 1st rounder or Heisman winner??? As a Sophomore??? A true sophomore?? What a joker...

I don’t agree with benching him at all. It worked out great too. He was much better the second half.

Pick one in the first half, Tom. Look down the road a bit.

yes, sir. definitely better to bench your young QB than to let him work through a funk and bring the team back for a road win.

you couldn't be more correct, hope to see you on the sidelines from now on

Top, I'm not trying to beef with you, but this was Illinois, a team we were favored by 13 points. Can you really look yourself in the mirror and think that this would be the case four games deep into Frosts 16th game? This team, coach Frost, and Martinez have a hell of a lot of work to do. This was the easiest game on our schedule for the rest of the year. Look at the big picture. C'mon, man.

Pick one in the first half, coach.

Well, I suppose it could have been the 3rd series after he fumbled... But then again he came out and led the offense to a TD... Maybe the next series when on 1st down, Mo rushed for an 8 yard loss putting the offense in a 2nd and 18, I mean why wasnt he able to get the 1st down? Or how about benching him after the Mills fumble??? Oh I know, the drive that he threw a 1st down strike to Noa that was flat out dropped after a holding penalty that had the offense well behind the chains... Which one do you think Chuck???

Actually, during the 2nd half of the Colorado game. Sending a message to a man that has been anointed by the media that he is Heisman contender after one year of playing football, could send a positive message to a young player and encourage him to pick his game up, loosen up a bit, and show that no matter how good a player is, one can always be replaced for a series or two until you get your mind right. Football 101.

The young man has been playing tentative and scared since the first game. I don't know the reason why, but anyone with a grade-school football IQ can see this. I suspect it is the high expectations that the media and the fans have placed upon him for his play. I can't fault him for this, but sitting out a series or two to get his mind right? Hell yes.

You suggested that his play tonight not be praised and that he should have been benched in the 1st half. Now were back to a game from two weeks ago. Thats odd to me... I agree that he hasnt shown the electric play making ability from last season, and playing QB comes with a great deal of scrutiny when you're not living up to the fans expectations... But you have to give credit where credit is due. He played well tonight especially in the 2nd half... Hopefully, he can build on it...

Agreed if we're going to get to a bowl game, we can't have more play from AM like that first half. We need him to play better and play with a lot more confidence than he's shown so far this season. I'm not saying to bench him, but let him sit out a series and see the defense from the sideline.

He played like crap for 3/4ths the game.. Mr. cherry picking stats man. Martinez sucks in my opinion. Never will like the guy as a qb, and can not stand the thought of living with him the rest of this season, much less the next 2 years.

He did finally overcome adversity for the first time, so maybe it is a turning point for him. That's the only positive thing I can say about it.

Given that we put up 700 yards of offense against a bad team like we were supposed to, but also had 4 TOs and well over 100 yards in penalties, for the blame to be pinned on one person is plain stupid.

Seriously, we all have agendas here. Me included. But to say the reason this game was in question is because of Martinez is ridiculous.

Message boards overreact both ways. There was overreaction in the heat of the game. Is the overreaction now that the game was won any different? Now we’re proud and impressed with this team?

This was the fourth game of the season against the worst team in the west division, and we scrambled to come back in the end and squeeze out a victory. We got the win, and yes I’m glad we got the win. But I’m not going to put on my blinders and overlook an incredibly sloppy and undisciplined performance that should not be happening at this stage of the season.

I find his play this season somewhat perplexing too regardless of today’s stats. I actually noticed it last season too, but attributed it to his injury. Right now, I just think it is who he is: incredibly talented showing flashes of greatness while also flashes of poor decision making and afraid to make a mistake. Couple that with play selection that doesn’t always emphasize his strengths and here we are. If I recall he was injured his Senior year of high school, so you have that factor —he is still somewhat playing catch-up. I’m not sure benching him as a means of sending a message to him to “shape up” would do anything at all. He needs to keep playing football and then if he just isn’t progressing, then reassess. I’m all for letting other QB’s play but you have to be careful there too because they’ll have their own learning curve to deal with. GBR.

Hard to argue against this... the issue is not just a QB issue. The entire offense contributed to the closeness of the game. And it was sloppy and frustrating most of the game.

The poster's here can be a joke. They live in a false history of glory days mauling mediocre to bad Big 8 opponents ( excluding Oklahoma), and glorify decent past players to God like status. Give me Martinez, Robinson and MO Washington over Tagge, Kinney and Rodgers as sophomores/freshmen anytime. The latter were solid and steady, but as dynamic trios go I'take our current batch. Give Frost another two years to finish stocking our lines and we will be ready to reclaim our glorious past. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the roller coaster ride to the 6-6 or 7-5 and a bowl I have predicted for the past year.
