Saw a tweet earlier today from a past college coach that stated that there are currently 4500 players in transfer portal.

Someone replied below that tweet that said that about 30% of players going into transfer portal will probably end up not finding a new home and are getting bad advice.

Crazy world.

How long is it going to take before signing a binding football contract with a school becomes the norm?
Something has to put an end to this freefall of craziness.

But on the other side, some schools may want to pause on a binding contract, there are way too many examples of players who came on campus and never worked out. Now a school is contractually bound, and NIL monies are tied up on a wasted experiment.

I think that 30% figure refers to all college football players. I think percentage who fail to land at an FBS program is closer to 50%.

Evaluations and signings would need to have much more scrutiny and thought and can also have clauses such as year limits or meeting certain goals such games started or playing time achieved.

Seems like offering big up front contracts to those with no body of work (in college football) to justify it is a pretty dumb bet!

I'd like to see stats on what kids make before going into the portal and what they make after.
Great point... How many actually end up signing for worse deals?

We already all know of one situation..... with Nico Iamaleava at Tennessee. He certainly lost money going into the portal.

I am guessing it happens a lot.

I know you’re using sarcasm. And I agree. Sadly, we all know that the grass on the other side frequently turns out to be less green than first thought. The portal isn’t teaching these kids anything good. It’s simply creating discontentment and fueling greed. Sad times for college sports.

I looked up the details of the portal and couldn't find a definitive answer on how long a player can be in the portal. For example the thousands of players from last year. The portal sounds like the waiting area Beetlejuice was in 😆 🤣

Nobody can say this is what the portal was intended for. The intent was to relax some of the NCAA's previous stringency regarding transferring, which was nearly impossible in most circumstances, without going down to FCS for a year. I'm generally opposed to transferring, but I can see it being useful for guys who see the writing on the wall, or are flat out told by their current coach, that they simply will not ever start or get meaningful playing time. Most college players are dealing with 5 years to play football and then they'll never play again, so I can see players in that situation wanting to transfer somewhere that they'll actually get to play a bit before hanging it up.

But the portal has gone far, far, far beyond that. Tons of starters are transferring. Everyone is just looking for a bigger pay day. It's destabilizing for everyone and counterproductive to whatever shred of legitimacy remains for the student athlete model.

It's not really sarcasm. These players do think it's going to be better somewhere else. It's a natural human tendency... which is why it's a cliche.

For some it will play out - they'll make more money or get more playing time or both. I don't know how often it works out.

Some players are also "forced out" for lack of a better term, which is what we're seeing on the OL.

If what I read is true (and who knows?) but it was reported that 75% of players in the portal do not improve their situation. That could be some combination of NIL earnings, playing time and draft position. You have A LOT of lateral movement and a fair number of players who overestimate their worth and end up in worse situations.

The combination of the maturity level of the players involved, NIL and the portal is proving to be a toxic brew.

All this just so we can have NCAA football video game. This is the result of greed. It will get worse before it ever gets better.

And supposedly, so kids could sell their autograph........ I was against NIL from day 1 - still am - I couldn't have truly imagined what it would look like, but it is indeed the mess I knew it'd become.

If I were a decent athlete now (not an NFL prospect), why would I not like the opportunity to get a free education AND they pay me money, even if its weekend beer money. Win/Win for me.... even if not a starter.

I think this is all true.. But that isn't what most (or at least many) or doing. One of the key things you said is "get a free education". Education is no longer really a parr of the equation. When you transfer 3 or 4 times in four years, you probably aren't graduating and you definitely aren't focusing on the education piece of it.

Generation Z are the players who are 100% on board and don't care.
That's fine. But how many of them are going to get paid? And of those who do, how many of them will get life-changing money? How many of them are talented enough to ever get drafted 3-400? What percent is that of all college football players? 2-3-4%? Miniscule. What percent of Gen Z do college football players make up? Probably no more than 1-2% of 1%. If they have any common sense, they better get their degrees. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. They better have enough money to buy underwear because I would not want to settle for milk bone underwear.

Scrap NIL, close the portal, cap coach salaries at institution’s highest tenured professor salary, scrap the CFP, and bring back regular bowls. Then we can enjoy college football, again. Student athletes playing for the love of their school and the game!
