5 Days in Europe

I've got five days in Europe by myself. I can go wherever I want and do whatever I want. I've never been anywhere over there so it will all be brand new. Any recommendations?

One note - leave prostitution and hooking up with European women out of this thread. I'm married and my wife would find out, I just know it.

Of course lots of good places. One place: Paris (Sights/art/beauty/Versailles). Two places: Paris 3 & London 2. Rome (history) 3 & Firenze /Flo (art) 2 good too. More than 2 & you spend more time chasing yourself than anything. You could pick others & not be sorry.

Sounds like Wayne is building an alibi.

"I swear honey. Look at the thread I started on the Paddock."

Wayne, go to north France. I heard that's where all the white people are to ease your anxiety

Willy - I fly every week for my job and I have OCD. Somehow I've come to believe that if I ever cheated on my wife I'd die in a terrible plane crash. So it's my own mortality I'm concerned about, not a morality thing.

Was gonna talk about Amsterdam, with sex toy shops, "coffee" houses and whores, as one of the very few cities in Europe I've been to.. So uh... Yeah Paris, I guess.

I've never been to Europe but if I were to go, I'd probably hit up London, Paris, and Rome. I am a person that likes to see sights and all 3 are good for that. You can see the Tower of London, London Eye (i believe that is what that big ferris wheel is called), Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Vatican City. There are tons of museums in those cities and I believe a lot are free. At least in London from when I was researching. Plus a lot of food places to try. Sounds like a fun trip to take.

With only 5 days, you should pick no more than two cities for your stay. Otherwise you are wasting too much time in transit. Italy is my favorite European country. It has it all, as in history, art, architecture, great food, good weather, most people understand English, Americans are better tolerated and it is less expensive than some countries like France or the U.K. Rome is a must and then pair it with either Milan, Venice or Florence.

One last tip: Hire a local guide. They can get you into the most popular places without having to wait in long lines. This will help you maximize your time and see some less touristy attractions.

I really didn't enjoy London as much as a few other cities. Felt like most everyone I met wasn't even FROM the UK originally. It was like going to New York. Some of the other cities nearby made better visits...Bath was very cool. Edinburgh was my favorite stop. Rome is another great place if you're into history. haven't seen Paris yet.

<------ worshipped London.

Congrats on 5 days alone over there, don't imagine you can go wrong no matter what you decide.

Not to hijack, but I'm spending 9 nights alone in Prague and Krakow later this year. Anyone been to that part of Europe? Any must-do's?

The only concrete item on my itinerary so far is a trip over to Auschwitz from Krakow.

Rome was pretty amazing for packing in so much cool stuff to see in such a short time/area. Pompeii is sorta close, and many other cities you can get to easily by rail. I would recommend doing a Scandanavian trip. Iceland Air gives you the free stopover and continues on to most anywhere you want to go. Best part (but the most expensive) of my 17 day Euro trip was Norway - the Norway in a Nutshell tour was phenomenal. Easy to swing down to Denmark or Germany or Amsterdam or what have you.

And with only 5 days, you can do 2 cities that aren't that close if you do the overnight rail. Not much more than a hotel and you wake up at your destination.

I could've spent a month in London and that still wouldn't be enough time to see it all. Would've enjoyed every bit of it too, but those two things can be said about a few cities in Europe I've been to.

Depends on what you're wanting to see/do, really. If you're in it for the history, go for London, Paris, or Rome. If you're in it for relaxation and a vacation type of 5 days, go see Venice and Florence. Sightseeing goals will be met in pretty much any major city you go to.

Never been to Germany, but spend an evening/afternoon wandering Covent Garden and especially Soho in London -- incredible, imo. Both remind me a bit of the Villages in NYC, just bigger.

During the day a lot can be seen around Parliament Square from a historical/tourist standpoint. It's easy as hell to get around w/ the Tube, walking through parks, or a Bus. Hyde Park is unreal, also, grab a $3 bike and do a loop.

Okay - Itinerary is set.
- Istanbul (Thurs - Sun) - I have to be over there for that; doesn't count as part of the five days.
- London (Mon-Tues)
- Munich (Wed - Friday)
I last visited London in 2010 and posted here about it. Purchased my Brompton folding bike just down the street from Buckingham Palace. All sorts of fun stuff to see in that city. Next visit, I'm gonna hit up London Eye.

Little brother and I visited Munich a few years ago. Ensure you check out the original Hofbräuhaus München. Schneider also operates a nearby pub. Love their Hopfenweisse. Lots to see just in the Stadtmitte (downtown area). Keep in mind Munich was extensively rebuilt after WWII.

I lived in Germany for over 11 years and really wish I could have spent more time in Bavaria.

Have a good, safe journey.

I like your choices, not that it matters.

Just to be able to join in the conversation I always recommend Rome. Also, as mentioned before, I feel a that a local guide is always a good investment.

In Czech Republic they have some ***** houses that are free. 100% free.

But you have to give permission to be filmed and aired.
[laughing]

I'll visit Czech Republic some day and spend a month just hanging out. Found some cheap places to stay.

I've never been to Poland but Prague is great. Hit up Old Towne, lots of interesting things there. The castle is cool and has a decent view of the city. Charles Bridge is pretty cool as well.

If you've got a car, you can drive out to Pilsin, maybe 45 minutes to an hour, and see the Pilsner Urquell brewery. Budvar Budweis is also near there, the original home of Budweiser.

I'm staying at a hotel called Pod Vezi which is apparently right next to Charles Bridge. One of Trip Advisor's highest ranked hotels in the city for $89/night. [laughing] Strong dollar FTW.

Won't have a car but I imagine I could still find a way to hit up Urquell which I would love. Otherwise plan on doing a lot of day drinking and wandering around. Hit up some microbrewery tours and beer tastings, etc. Mix in some museums and cultural ****, too.

We spent all of 5 minutes in picadilly circus. There were some parts of London I liked, but it felt more like New York with a castle in the middle of it to me.

I agree on the overall energy -- but we worship NYC, so maybe that's why we loved it so much.

I definitely like NY, and I like London, too, but I just liked other cities more. We stayed on Queensway by Kensington Palace.

Really, I compared London to Edinburgh, and I felt like Edinburgh was more "authentic" than London (we did 3 days in Edinburgh before 4 days in London). But I really liked Westminster Abbey (big history nerd). I was disappointed in how "Disney-esque" the Tower of London and a lot of other sites in the city are compared to, say, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, or even Windsor (which, granted, is basically in outer London.)

We did do a trip from London to Stonehenge and then all day in Bath...that's a cool English city.

I'm a history teacher, so what I've done in both cities (never been to Istanbul) mainly revolved around historical sites. In no order:

London
- Tower of London
- Westminster Abbey
- British Museum (ridiculous how many historical artifacts there are - Rosetta Stone, Parthenon sculptures, Easter Island head, etc.)
- British Library (often looked over...Magna Carta, Shakespeare writings, Da Vinci notebook pages, Lennon handwritten lyrics)

Munich
- Hobrauhaus (huge beer hall - smallest glass is a liter. You'll be surrounded by Germans and the culture)
- Dachau concentration camp
- Marienplatz (big square in the middle of the city - a lot to do around here)

3 days Florence, 2 days Vernazza.
Chill out, eat.[thumb2][thumb2]
Have stayed in Vernazza & Riomaggiore. Enjoy the area a lot. Have walked the entire CT trail & down from the hill/mountain above V. Trouble is, too many others enjoy the CT anymore.

Cinque Terre is getting touristy... But so cool.

We walked it all as well. I had to dose Vicodin every morning to deal with impending foot pain. Need to be a Billy Goat to negotiate the climbs.

Opiates and wine FTMFW.

Prague is a beautiful city with more of an old world feel than any other metropolis I've been to - disclaimer: I haven't been there in 15 years.

Absinthe is for tourists, but be sure to have lots of fresh Pilsner.

One of coolest things about Europe is the Euro-Rail system. You can take a train to any country and every big city you want to visit. There is so much to do and so much to see. If I went to Amsterdam first I may forget about the rest and stay there. One cool thing to do is take a sea rail from either France or Belgium over to Dover, England, then hop a train to London. I went to Europe 4 times while in the military..
