Do we know if Nana is going to be welcomed back? I am not sure why he was suspended, but I have a feeling he may not be back.

I also heard that a rumor (so take it with a grain of salt) that Thor may head back to Iceland to play pro ball there.

If Hoiberg is able to keep Roby and Harris and keep Green committed, he at least has a start to a roster for year one.

I doubt Atenken returns.

Signing Green is a MUST.
I think they likely bring in 2 transfers to set out until the 20-21 season.

Signing a "5" for the '19 - 20 season will be imperative.

I would not count on Jervay Green. He was extremely close with Coach Miles and Coach Lewis.

We're going to need at least 3-4 good grad transfers who can play right away next year, to have any chance of being competitive next year.

Nana will most likely not be back and Thor may have had enough and will return to play pro ball in Iceland or wherever he's from. That gets us to 5 open scholarship spots. I'd anticipate 2 grad transfers and 3 traditional transfers/jucos.

"At first I was nervous. He's so famous, it's crazy. When he walked in the room everybody was taking pictures and stuff, and I'm like, 'this is a big deal.' But when I sat down and got to know him and his personality, everything was going good." Jervay Green on Fred Hoiberg. That kind of reaction is usually reserved for Coach K John Calipari, Bill Self, and Tom Izzo. We officially have a superstar head coach. God Bless Bill Moos!

***removed false comment about Harris being gone. Confused him with Allen***

Next year could be really rough.

I went through the basketball roster and these are the scholarship guys on the 2019-2020 roster.
  1. Akol Arop (FR) 6' 6"
  2. Mika Adams-Woods (FR) 6' 2"
  3. Amir Harris (r-FR) 6' 6"
  4. Karrington Davis (r-FR) 6' 6"
  5. Brady Heiman (SO) 6' 11"
  6. Nana Akenten (JR) 6' 6"
  7. Thorir Thorbjarnarson (JR) 6' 6"
  8. Dachon Burke Jr. (rJR) 6' 4"
  9. Isaiah Roby (SR) 6' 8"
Hoiberg has at least 4 scholarships at his disposal to get to the 13 scholarship limit. There's some talk about Roby going pro and some other possible transfers. I’m not gonna to start pumping the hoops sunshine yet because I'm sure there will be some growing pains but if Hoiberg can get 3 or 4 ballers, the 2019-2020 season could be exciting.
Nothing really to add to this, except that Amir Harris will be a Sophomore, not Redshirt Freshman.

Fans need to be extremely patient. Basketball success at Nebraska is going to take time, if it ever happens. Investing in facilities, and hiring a great coach, have put the pieces in place to be successful. But it will take multiple recruiting classes, and cobbling together wins, to transform the perception that you can't have a winning basketball program at football school Nebraska. When the standard for greatness over a hundred years is just winning a single NCAA tournament game, it's a tough place to win.

Look at Shaka Smart at Texas. They hired the hottest coach in the country, and in four years he's managed a .515 winning percentage, and an average finish of 6th in the Big XII standings. That's with a significantly better recruiting base and name recognition in basketball. The program needs fan support while they go through the painful process of trying to improve.

I can find examples too, like Chris Beard, in 3 years, he has his team in 2 elite 8's and a final 4, at worst.

Oh......that's a little dramatic. We'll be just fine under Hoiberg & Co. Success will come fairly quickly. 2 years from now I think people will be surprised how far we've come.

You can cross Mika Adams Woods off of that list. He is opening up his recruitment.

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to count out Green. He had a 2 hour meeting with Hoiberg and by all reports, it went really, really well. I know a couple big names have inquired about him to his coach, but they can't officially contact him as he signed his LOI with NU and hasn't been released.

Agree, it doesn't take nearly as long to turn a bball program around vs a football program. Get a couple top transfers and a year or 2 for everything to mesh. 2-3 years we could be in the tourney.

Or Rick Barnes. He took over a complete dumpster fire at Tennessee but won a share of the SEC title in this third year and finished 2nd in his fourth year.

I edited the initial post. Rivals shows him as "signed" so I wasn't sure whether to include him or not.
Once they're signed, don't they have to get a release from the school?? Kind of surprised that both parties would be so quick to release. Doesn't mean he still won't re-sign with N, but would be rare.

After reading this thread, it sounds bleak. And to think we would have had an outside chance at the NIT next year even though it was always a rebuilding year.

Chance at the NIT? If this is a joke then where is your punch-line?

Bleak? The leader of the drama club has showed up. Or perhaps you're a disgruntled Tim Miles fan.

I'm excited for the 2019-20 season with the head coach change. Wipe the roster clean as far as I'm concerned. Give Hoiberg a clean slate.
I could be mistaken, I believe he was being sarcastic. I suspect you and he are on the same page.

Turnover is a part of coaching changes. It happens. The thing that sucks the most about losing Adams-Woods and Allen is that there is no point guard on the roster right now. Hopefully they find someone that is an immediately eligible transfer or a JUCO PG.
Here's how I see the roster shaking out:
  1. Akol Arop (FR) 6' 6"
  2. Amir Harris (SO) 6' 6"
  3. Karrington Davis (r-FR) 6' 6"
  4. Brady Heiman (SO) 6' 11"
  5. Jervay Green(JR) 6' 3
  6. Thorir Thorbjarnarson (JR) 6' 6"(wouldn't be surprised to see him go back home)
  7. Dachon Burke Jr. (rJR) 6' 4"
  8. Isaiah Roby (SR) 6' 8"
I would guess we see around 5 or 6 open scholarships. A couple transfers? Couple JUCOS? Couple HS kids? We need a couple bigs and a couple PG's IMO.

Nana Akenten will never play for Hoieberg..

He is a brick layer from the perimeter..

Fred Hoiberg is a shooter. He knows how to teach shooting form. Everyone is going to improve dramatically from the perimeter.

Allen was never a point guard, which is why his loss isn't as devastating as it could have been. He is undersized for today's game as a 2. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to have Allen stick around, but 6'1 shooting guards can be a liability on both sides. The team absolutely could benefit from a strong point guard but that may have to come from the transfer portal.

Note: I think sometimes there is too much hope from the transfer portal. It's worth noting, if a guy is in the portal, it's because he wasn't valued enough by the current team or he is disgruntled. That makes hitting gold less than a 50-50 shot. While Nebraska has had great success from guys like Petteway, Palmer and Copeland, that type of hit rate is not the norm.

You either have it or you don’t.... Regardless how much Hoieberg helps him out.. He’s a liability on the floor..

We will see how this unfolds..

As a fan during Miles' tenure you were almost forced out of desperation to put hope in the transfer portal given his lack of success in developing or retaining the young talent he did recruit as freshman. The transfers also provided the primary hope for some future roster stability as after sitting a year, there was less chance they would leave. A better coach (hopefully Hoiberg) will continue to use transfers strategically, but have better overall roster management and player development.

I agree that he was not a true point guard, but I think that he could have done it if needed. I’m pretty indifferent to transfers right now as it comes as part of the coaching change territory.

Disagree, there are countless stories of players that weren't good outside shooters that with proper development increased their shooting pct significantly.

Cam Mack is trending towards Nebraska. Land him and lock up Green and you have the #2 and #3 top JUCO recruits.

Mack-Green-Burke would be a very nice tandem at the guard positions. I’m not counting on Roby but if he stays, with those guards we will be competitive. Our depth will suck and having no big man again will be a killer unless Hoiberg and company can find some immediate help.
