Very quick calculations but it looks like 5a north will be a meat grinder. I just edited this post once I looked at a map and it looks like either LaSalle Peru or Morris as the furthest north team in the south with Hillcrest/JCA/any south suburb team that thought they had a chance at going south in the north.

While many may consider Montini, Rita, Hillcrest, or Joliet Catholic the favorites in the 5A north meatgrinder, I see 2 teams that none of those teams will want to run into early on.....Sycamore and St. Laurence.

that is 6 real good teams that may be jammed into the same 16 team bracket. Would make for an electric second and third round but it would be unfortunate if ESL lands in 5A and running clocks their way to the title game while the other teams in 5A are having a real entertaining playoff.

Luckily it looks like ESL is squarely in 6a. I have Sycamore as the smallest 6a right now as well. I know I only really follow suburb schools because of this message board and don’t know a ton about the south schools but I feel pretty confident saying 7 maybe even 8 out of the top 10 teams in the bracket will be in the north. My calculations were done sitting on a barstool but I have JCA/Rita being the 8/9 playing into sterling/Chicago heights Marian. We’ll see how far off I am tomorrow.

yes I just saw ESL and Sycamore likely in 6a. I think Sycamore is dangerous in 6A. Forgot about Sterling too. They can be a major player in 5A. And Rochester may have an opening if ESL is not in 5A south.

I got home so I had some paper to write on. I forgot about Joliet West not being in the outlook getting in 8a so that keeps sycamore down in 5a. Since i was bringing in a south team for them it’s going to mess with that a little with both Morris and LP south and then whoever is the next furthest south from there. Still doesn’t change the meat grinder north, just makes it worse with sycamore added.

How does Joliet (West) qualify for 8A?

Was just looking at Soucie's brackets, and they mirror what you have been saying. Looks like a tremendous imbalance between North and South, especially after Rochester got blown out in Week 9.

Do you expect Soucies predictions to be spot on? Think there's any uncertainty on 5a North south split?

There have been diagonal lines in years past, but unlikely based on geography of 5A teams. There will be an outlier or 3 across classes (teams you thought would go north wind up south), but it will be a scant few.

4ish years ago moving sterling down south saved big travel on multiple games. I don’t see it this year, swapping sterling as the outlier with Marian it would save LP to Marion but that’s about it. Wouldn’t make sense for diagonal this year.

I've been saying for years Sycamore is one of the most underrated playoff teams.

If they go 6a I will be glad and will jump on board to root for them all the way to the 6a finals.

Well. I was very wrong. The line was drawn crooked with JCA going south instead of Chicago heights Marian.

JCA and St Rita have the easiest schedules here.

The South like always is no match for JCA. St Rita is red hot and will win the north.

Rochester is a very good team but they don't match up well against JCA. JCA wins this game with their long drives and controlling the clock.

The dude at the end of the IHSA Pairing show picked Rochester to win 5A. I was pretty surprised by that.

5A north has many threats to get to the finals....Sterling, Montini, sycamore, Hillcrest, Rita, Laurence. Laurence and Hillcrest have to knock each other out in round 1 and sycamore and Montini in round 2 while Rita and sterling knock each other off in round 2.

the south has JCA, Rochester, and maybe a decent run from SHG, Kankakee, or Morris, but those 5 teams pale in comparison to the talent in the top 6 of the north.

Agreed about Sycamore. They are one team capable of beating anyone in 5A. Problem for them is past is brutally tough bracketing.
They will get Montini at home in the 2nd Round, though.

Laurence / Hillcrest has to be one of the best 1st Round matchups in 5A, since the inception of 8 classes.
