I remember when MC moved to 5A in 89 (or 90) and SR remained in 6A until 94. Because of my inferiority complex when it came to MC, I always thought 6A was significantly more difficult. But looking back on it, 5A might have been equally, or maybe even more, difficult in the early to mid 90s?

I really miss the 6 classes.

I believe there were years (1992) when the top few teams in 5a were equal or better than the top few in 6a, but the larger class almost always has been the deeper class (5a vs. 6a or 8a vs. 7a). I think deeper is more difficult.

5A was best class in '91 '92 for sure. '92 5A winner WWS beat 6A winner NN 34-6 for example. I recall one of the papers having an article on how much better 5Awas pretty sure that was 92-will dig it out

Mount Carmel was in 5A in 1986. Lost to WN in state Championship. Wheaton Norths last and Mount Carmel went on to may more.....

Certainly, on average, the biggest class will be the best. Probably something like 4 out of 5 years. I think around '09/'10 7A might have been best class. Would have to go back and look but I know WWS and GW had an epic battle and WWS had blown out eventual 8A winner MS.

WWS over MS I believe Week 1 or Week 2 on ESPN on a Friday around 6:00pm.

MS was much improved by Champaign time. But, I agree with the jist of your post.
