As you go though your day today please take a moment to reflect on the great sacrifice made by thousands of young men who stormed the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago today, most of these men were between the ages of 18-22,their bravery on that day and the following months allow us to live in the free society that we so cherish.

I just read something interesting.Canadian actor James Doohan, who played Scotty on the original Star Trek was among the first ashore on Juno Beach and was shot 6 times! Yogi Berra was a gunners mate launching rockets at German defenses on Omaha beach, actor Art Carney was wounded by shrapnel on D day and actor Charles Durning was wounded on Omaha Beach and was the only member of his unit to survive the day.

I was watching a segment on The Today Show a few minutes ago about D-day. They were talking to film maker Ken Burns and hec said that there are Americans now who have no idea what D-day means and what happened there. He went on to say these same Americans thought we fought along side Germany against the Russians during WW2. How sad is that? I am so grateful that I was taught by my dad and also taught in history class while I was in school about these important events in our history. It is our responsibility to teach to the younger generation about these events in our history. Don't leave it up to the school system. Tell your young children and grandchildren. The way it's going it's just a matter of time when 9-11 is a mystery. OFC

I'll watch the first fifteen minutes of 'Saving Private Ryan' and Band of Brothers 'Day of Days' episode today.

I cannot begin to fathom what that must have been like.

Saw this posted on another board and wanted to share it.

Colin Powell was attending a conference in England when the Archbishop of Canterbury asked him if our actions in Iraq were an example of empire building under George Bush.

Powell's response:

"Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

The room then became quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

Always remember.

I have a customer that was a part of the invasion. He still gets around really well, and was telling me a few months ago that he got invited to bring one person to accompany him for a memorial or something there.
His memory of that day, and the months leading up to it are very clear.

He's taking his 35 year old grand daughter.

I have always been fascinated by D-Day. I can’t imagine what that must have been like. The bravery and courage it took to do that is unfathomable.

One woman actually was on the beach that day despite the ban on women in active combat. Martha Gellhorn. She had to sneak in. She was a journalist and married to Ernest Hemingway.

He’s from a different war, but when I was in the Navy, I worked for this guy. At the time, he was the only Medal of Honor winner on active duty in any branch of the service. I was too young and stupid to realize who I had in front of me.
He used to tell us some CRAZY stories late at night when we had the mid-watch at sea.

@HonkeyT , this guy is from Spartanburg S.C.!!
