We EARNED THIS LOSS... Worst defensive outing by a duke team in the last 2 years no doubt, and worst team effort of the year, hands down... Earned it, Deserved it, and Got it... I hope they have the toughest practice Ever this week... I understand if a team is shooting lights out from 3, but they only made 2 three point shots all night. We just got Dogged in the paint...

Yeah not often does a team get upset by a mid major when they only make 2 3’s but hey that’s what they did to us

20 turnovers, 16 missed free throws. This was really non Duke like. I said on another thread, Duke interior offense and defense will be the hindrance this year. Tonight showed it to be true. Players played horrible rotation defense, and horrible on ball defense. Tre jones with I think 8 turnovers himself... just a total uncharacteristic Duke basketball game... tough loss tonight... I hate to see the streak snapped, on a fame like this.

Looks like the scorer everytime unless we got a block or a turnover. That’s awful

And most were contested shots or layups. Not many freebies. Those guys came to play on both ends of the court. Probably some of the best defense played on Duke this year. Of course they will lose their next game to Sister Mary Francis School of the Blind. You know it's coming.

They looked good tonight though.

The recipe to beating Duke has always been spread us out and get into the paint. SFA did that all night. We couldn’t keep the ball out and once we doubled it was lights out. We played a step slow. And when you double as much as we do, you can’t be late. Someone is always open and if the dribbler has a clear identifiable lane to the open guy, it’s too easy.

Yes- Shockingly we got the ball near the hoop plenty of times and most teams would have conceded the 2. But SFA gave away nothing and sent us to the foul line rather than giving up a layup or dunk. And we struggled at the line.

Them SFA kids earned that win last night. They deserved it. Their defensive pressure and intensity was a problem and our ball handlers were clearly uncomfortable

I didn’t watch the full game yet...why in the hell were we doubling? When did we start doubling on the perimeter? Smh. Sounds like another coaching lost. Sometimes I think he under coach on purpose

The loss wasn’t necessarily on coaching, but I think K made some questionable judgments. We’ve seen him before kind of let guys try and play through things as learning moments. Last night it didn’t work.

It didn’t look like anyone wanted to be there. Through six games I thought the last thing I’d see out of this team was a complete lack of effort. Surprisingly, from where I was sitting at home, it looked exactly like that.

Exactly....lack of effort...I agree 100%

Duke did a lot of things wrong, but SFA did a lot of things really good too. I only caught the second half, but from what I saw the players on SFA just seemed determined to win. They were focused and well coached. They found holes in Duke’s defense and did an excellent job of exploiting them.

We weren’t as intense as them to go with some questionable coaching decisions. I think Coach K losses games on purpose sometimes

Maybe I’m wrong, but I didn’t see effort as the problem. Offensively, they kept doing the same thing with success, and Duke on defense kept doing the same thing without.
Tre was bad. He and Jack are our only 2 main veterans. Jack played under control, and did what we should expect. Tre on the other hand couldn’t beat his man, nor could he stop his man.

Hey I know we forget these are just youngsters, but honestly did not think Tre could look as bad on both ends of court. I liked K's honesty post game, as he did not try to hide his disappointment. Hopefully team takes it just as hard, and takes it out on Winthrop...OFC

I still think a second 5 needed to be tried. I'm sure in practice that the second 5 can be competitive against our first 5 for some possessions and definitely think they would be capable of playing SFA. Coach K sent no message to the freshman yesterday...they played a lot regardless of how the game was going. A short spell of our second 5 ( maybe Robinson, Jav, Goldwire, Baker, AOC) would have been a curveball to SFA and a message to our team..plus i think they would have defended the paint better. Too late now though.

Winthrop is actually rated significantly higher than SFA. My problem with Coach K is he never says the game was on him. He never take responsibility for his mess ups

Funny you say that, because I was thinking the same thing. We all know K calls timeouts to set up plays when the game is on the line and K not calling a timeout at the end of the game is odd. I think his post game interview is telling, he stated a few times that his players weren't responding to anything and that they acted like they were going to win the game. Almost sounds like our players were cocky coming back from NY and K was hanging them out to dry a bit. lol

I think javin and AOC bring nothing to the table ..give someone else a shot and see how they do...could it be much worse than those 2?

I'm okay with Joey taking AOC's minutes because Joey can actually make shots fall.

But Javin? Who do you play in place of him? Don't get me wrong, Javin is who he is, but who else do we have? J Rob? What have you seen of him to warrant minutes?

Agree with this. Justin is a good kid, but he’s a very last resort, or mop up duty.
Alex is the head scratcher. Seems the fans want him to want it more than he does. I could be totally wrong. But he strikes me as the type of kid that if you were on campus and walked up to a few kids with skateboards, he’d be one of them.

During his presser he said “It’s my responsibility obviously, we did not respond well to winning in New York”

The only players that seemed fired up the entire game was Savarino and Worthington. Everyone else seemed like they could care less. A lot of arguing on the court. Tre and Jack getting pissed because guys were outta position. Wendell looked confused a few times on offensive. Hurt seemed to be playing his *** off and finally gave up when everyone wasn’t giving it 100%. We will bounce back for sure!!!!

What warrants javin getting minutes?
Because he is a senior? Because he brings near nothing when he plays except fouls and dumb plays

My problem is, you seem to talk a lot of trash before you even know what's going on. You talked trash about how we played, later admitted, you hadn't watched the game yet. Now you say that straight up lie on K, and obviously, you didn't catch his presser, where he said "It was obviously on me", Damn bro, get in the game.

K also gave SFA great praise and credit. It sucks a lot of you didn't see how tough they actually played. Sure we turned it over a lot, but it had a lot to do with them. Now FT's yea, that's on us, and it was awful. Those kids played so hard , I KNEW they couldn't keep it up. They did, start to finish, they played every possession like it was game point. It was amazing.

Well I see you like to follow me so you also would have seen that my very first post on this game I said “based on the box score” then I went on to say what I had to say. I’m tired of hearing that young stuff. He need to bury that excuse. You’re young because you picked the squad. We don’t need to hear that everytime we lose. We lost this game because of coaching mixed with the other team wanting it. We damn near won even with them wanting it more. But during that point he just stopped coaching. If that’s a lesson he’s trying to teach early then that’s cool. But that we’re young bs needs to stop. It’s getting old.

That’s rare then. It’s always the we’re young and we don’t have depth excuse. Like he isn’t the one that pick the players. When he needed to say is he needed to do better and he made some coaching mistakes. When a coach takes full blame in a loss the players tend to come back and play harder for him.

One move that Coach K made that kind of made go hmmm ok was when he took Carey, Stanley and Moore out of the game at the same time and replaced them with DeLaurier, White and AOC. I don’t know if it was to give them a rest, to discuss what he wanted them to when they went back in or what but I thought it was a strange move to bring those 3 into the game at the same time.

I think Alex wants it, it's just that nothing seems to go his way on the court. And I'm not sure how the skateboard thing is relavent or somehow a dig on Alex.

According to what I've seen out of most post since last night, Duke should throw in the towel and not play any more basketball games. No one is any good, and Coach K is washed up.
Crazie, I'm with you. It just funny to me that when things are going south, there seem to be a few fans that just pop up out of nowhere with some extreme takes on the team or K. I saw everything from screw this team to K is over the hill. What I can't seem to figure out is where are these poster when Duke is winning? I guess they have better things to do with their time until it looks like a loss and all of a sudden they are no longer too busy to post. Bless their hearts! It's all good, there are plenty of ride or die fans here that keeps this board predominately positive, even after a disappointing loss. On to the next one, which will make GAME #8.
