Last year Vik-Val started a soccer thread to help us keep up with the teams all over the state. The playoffs are already into the 4th round

Raleigh area schools have dominated the state championships in 4A over the years but the split may break this string

in 8A, Hoggard is playing Laney for the eastern championship. 8A played one less round than 7A. The winner will play Myers Park or W Forsythe.

in 7A quarter finals, New Hanover plays Ashley. Winner plays Clayton or Chapel Hill for the eastern championship.

Wake County won’t be represented this year. I think they have won about 32 of the last 40 championships.

Lots of local teams doing well here in the smaller classifications. Patton in 3A, North Carolina School of Science and Math-Morganton in 1A, Newton-Conover and Hibriten in 4A, Hickory and East Lincoln in 5A and Watauga and A.C. Reynolds in 6A are all still playing. I went to Patton's match last night in the "feels like 16 degrees" wind chill, but I was happy to see the local guys get the win. I'll probably follow them to Polk County on Thursday and then see how it goes from there.

In 7A Lake Norman plays Cuthbertson on 11/13 and Marvin Ridge plays Porter Ridge on 11/13 as well. As a native from Iredell Co I will be pulling for Lake Norman. Wish them the best.
The winner these two games will play each other in Semis.
In 8A as CatscratchFever mention above in Western Championship game Myers Park will take on West Forsyth. That should be a good one. The Patriot is right lot of teams is doing well in smaller classifications. Best of luck to all the teams left. I will be keeping an eye on these games. Thank you CatScratchFever23 for starting the soccer thread back up.

Polk Clunty beat Patton 2-1 in 3A, but NCSSM-Morganton won and advances to play Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Tuesday night in 1A. That’s a conference rematch, TJCA won both games so far this season 4-0. AC Reynolds stays alive by beating Watauga in 6A and plays Catholic, while Newton-Conover advances and plays Ashe County for the right to play in the 4A state championship game.

BTW Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy are the “Gryphons” while NCSSM-Morganton are the “Dragons”. So it’s a Harry Potter spin off Tuesday night.

Been a good fall sports year so far. Volleyball played for the state championship and lost to Green Level. Now soccer in championship. Let’s hope football can advance tomorrow night also.
OBTW, not much of a soccer fan, doubt I make it to championship game.

7A - this will be New Hanovers 7th trip to the eastern finals since 2008. Their lone state championship was in 2021.

8A - with one less playoff round, Hoggard
secures its first state championship appearance.

I have been unable to locate my soccer post from last year and am too lazy to do the research again but here is a take in this years playoffs.

The Triangle, specifically Wake County, has dominated state soccer championships for 40+ years. I am far from a soccer expert but I attribute this success to their soccer association, CASL, which was created in the early 70’s. CASL is no longer an association and has been replaced by a few new associations in the Triangle, but make no mistake, they definitely had a head start for around 10 years over most of eastern NC. As stated, I am too lazy to complete the research again, but the Triangle has won around 33 or so of the last 40 state championships in the highest classes. Charlotte was able to win a few, as was the Triad. In fact, even when they didn’t win, a triangle team usually represented the east. New Hanover is one of the few teams that was fortunate enough to
appear in a 4A championship game but at least one was 3A. I believe TCR may have won a championship too.

With the 8 way split, the gauntlet through the Raleigh area teams has been weakened. To
win the east a coastal team had to beat one
or two Lumberton, Pinecrest or New Bern like teams before a 3 game tour of the Triangle teams. More often than not, one of those would knock the non triangle team out. I believe the route to a championship game is much easier now.

I understand that some of Wake County’s best players cannot play high school ball because they train with their clubs 5 days a week which could have an impact In addition, non triangle clubs have slowly caught up to the level of the triangles clubs. Those two advantages plus the 8 way split are the reasons the Triangles dominance may be coming to end, although I recognize this year may just be an anomaly.

What little I know is from my love of highschool sports, especially the Wildcats of New Hanover and from talking to a couple folks in the know. I would really like an On3 member who knows soccer to help out.

You're right. The Triangle (mostly Raleigh area has been pretty prominant in Men's Soccer for a quite some time. But there have been teams from Charlotte, the Triad, and Wilmington that have won. Here they are.

That’s about how I remember it. I knew Page had some titles. I forgot about Providence.
Thanks for the research. What surprised me the most was the small number of titles (2) from outside Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro.

Now with times posted, I must say this. They have championship games scheduled on school days and when school is in. Now I realize teams have to miss school, but schools will not excuse other students wishing to attend games.
Am I correct or am I missing something?

There are quite a few logistical conundrums that have already arisen that the powers that be did not foresee or think about too much.

Very likely schools will have fan buses going to the championship games and allow students who ride them to be excused. I suppose kids could say “I want to drive” and be excused and then skip it.

NCSSM-Morganton traveled to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy last night for the 1A west regional final. This was a rematch of conference foes with TJCA winning both season matches 4-0. This game was scoreless at halftime and then TJCA had a flurry of shots on goal that were either saved or hit the crossbar. A couple of minutes after that they arced a long shot from midfield that got over the keeper’s head for the first goal. Then them started attacking harder and got another goal. NCSSM fought back hard and cut the score to 2-1 with about 12 minutes left, but TJCA won 3-1, advancing to the state title game Thursday.

A few notes I gleaned from HS OT about the championship matches:
-This is the 19th state title game appearance for Charlotte Catholic, with 7 wins, third most ever. A win today will push them into a tie for second with 8.
-This is the first championship game appearance for both W. Forsyth and Hoggard in the 8A game. It's also the first appearance for Middle Creek, Falls Lake and Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.
-Western Alamance has outscored opponents 180-12 this season, both scoring the most goals and allowing the fewest of any of the teams participating in the state title games.
