Just looked it up: Colorado Rapids, based in Denver which is a huge pro sports town with ~3million people in the metro area average 14k per game. Pretty surprising and quite a bit lower than I'd expect. The NHL Avalanche, by comparison, average about 17,500.

How many home games does an MLS team play? I see it compared to baseball attendance but they play 80 home games

Bringing up MLS misses the point. I’m willing to bet most soccer fans in this country - myself included - don’t pay a ton of attention to the domestic league. They follow the English and Spanish leagues - because those are the best ones. The Mexican league is arguably more popular here than MLS. Even still, attendance is good and the league keeps expanding.
You're exactly right. EPL weekend mornings are gold Jerry, they're gold!! Liverpool's style and atmosphere sucked me in immediately.... if you watch a Man City and Liverpool match and don't enjoy it, you're not a sports fan.

The Rockies are averaging 32,500 and that is over 50 games (and they are 44-53).

The Rapids are averaging 14,500 and that is over 11 games (they are 6-6-9).

The fewer game scheduled sports really help the average attendance per game.

I'm not sure why the Denver market is more relevant than others. Atlanta United leads the MLS in attendance at 47,000 per game. The Braves are drawing 38,000 this year. MLS keeps expanding, and new stadiums are opened every year. This is a growing sport and league.

I believe Lou City averages around 10,000 per game and outdraws the Bats. That soccer would outdraw baseball would have been unthinkable 20-30 years ago.

You left out Charlotte, which has really good attendance in soccer.

Look I am not denying soccer is growing, the immigrant population in major cities alone by all rights should be a natural fan base. And if Man United played Arsenal in an exhibition game at Comm Stadium, or if there was a WC qualifier with the national team, hell, I would probably walk over there and attend just for the atmosphere alone.

But . . . I don't think you are comparing apples to apples when you compare attendance in one sport with four or five times the number of home games as another. By that metric, then I guess soccer is more popular than the NBA as well as MLB . . . . which is obviously not correct.

I think it is the anti-soccer people who want to compare the MLS attendance to MLB and others and claim it is failing. My point is that the MLS is doing very well, despite what others are saying in this thread.

The Denver market was mentioned by another poster - so stats were added in.

If any market and attendance were irrelevant to look at, it'd be Atlanta. They do not have a consistent capacity for soccer. It could be 42,500 or it could be 73,000. The Braves at 38,000 are averaging 93% capacity.

Lou City is doing well. Down on average this year, but get about 9800 per game (10 games).

Comparing attendance of a 17 game home MLS schedule to 81 MLB home games is apples to watermelons in many aspects.

And this is my issue with soccer fans.. summed up perfectly. "You don't like it, cause you don't understand it" type mantra.

I don't know. Just doesn't seem like something Football or Basketball fans would say. You don't like it? We get it, it's not for everyone.

Maybe the problem isn't so much the sport of soccer, but the pure arrogance of it's fans that turns people off. Like, the worst part about watching my brothers youth soccer games isn't the actual game.. it's sitting with soccer fans.

Until they can get and keep a National TV audience through 3 full seasons, the teams will be considered a hole in the ground to through money into. Only LA and Washington, DC have had and success.

Yes. All of my friends that are soccer fans follow EPL teams, and Lou FC because it is local. I don't know anyone that gives a crap about MLS.

I do have a really good friend that follows German soccer. He went over there several years ago and his friend introduced him to the German league. He went back and last night he went to the German DFL super cup game. Saw Rb Leipzig against Bayvern Munich. I know literally nothing about those teams but he said it was the best sporting event he'd ever been to.

Forgot to tape the Euro womens final at Wembley yesterday between Germany and England, which I probably would have watched and honestly seemed like it really was a hell of a match, all time record crowd in London for any soccer match, male or female (think I read that in today's paper)

But . . . . did the English soccer fans behave, or were they drunken violent A holes, as seems to be their custom?

Ok. I played American Football in college. LOVE IT!! Also played Basketball in HS with FB. Awesome sports. I hated soccer forever until I started digging in just a little and watching.

Erling Haaland is 6'4" tall and can run around 25 MPH!! The coordination and stamina of these guys are unbelievable.

I recently went to Madrid and caught REAL MADRID clinch the Laliga Championship that day. 95,000 people standing and singing the entire game!! I still get chills thinking about it. The game started at 4 and ended about 6:30. We THINK we know what tailgating is in the US but we do Not!! They started about 9 AM and didn't end until after Midnight.

I have been to NBA / college football / NFL (including Super Bowl) / NHL games in my lifetime... NOTHING HAS COMPARED to that Soccer Stadium shaking for over 2 and half hours... NOTHING

I caught the end of that game while eating out. It was really entertaining. I didn't see any drunken, violent behavior. If anything, it was pretty collegial between the athletes after the game.

A great thing about soccer is that 90 minutes of play takes less than 2 hrs including HT. Players don't run constantly for that entire period, but they make more 20-40 yard sprints than WRs do over 3.5 hrs. And the complaint that they just play keep away for half the game makes me wonder why 60 minutes of football which is mostly returning to huddles/calling play/lining up is more action. Action time is only 15-20 minutes of that - again over 3+ hrs. I scratch my head at that.

I can't watch a football for 3.5 hours on TV. Drives me stir crazy.

I DVR & start watching about midway thru Q3. I FF thru all the bs & typically catch up live with 5-7 minutes to go. And them I'm POed at commercial time the rest of the way.

But have at the 3.5 hours. Good for YOU.
