Did Sunkett say WE live this struggle every damn day when he doesn’t even live in ESL?

And Shannon did not retire - he was forced out because he told 60 Minutes that as an educator asked to grade the city and in particular, the mayor, he’d give an F.

Shannon coached at CBC lasted East Side with less success.

An old time BND writer brought somethhng up i forgot: One of the first games I covered at the BND was at Parsons. They hung the yard markers on a clothesline. Had to be the most intimidating place ever for visiting teams - especially from Chicago area.

Didn't Coach Shannon submit his resignation and it was accepted? From what I remember, he didn't actually intend on quitting and actually fought to get his job back, but ultimately it didn't work out. Like you said, he was publicly critical of the mayor as well as the school board who pretty much had it out for him. I've never been a big fan of Coach Sunkett, but I grew up a huge fan of Coach Shannon. Legend.

I have a signed copy of The Right Kind it Heroes.

Whatever the technicalities of Shannon leaving happened to be, I don’t remember the specifics, but he was forced out.

I can’t say I know as much about Sunkett, except maybe he is OK with somethings in the gray area that some may not like.

Whether it’s for the kids or himself, I’m not judging. I think he does much more good that I could look beyond that.

I have that book as well. I haven't read it in years, but it was a pretty good read. Shannon did some amazing things with so little to work with. I won't state my reasons for not being a fan of Sunkett on a public thread, but I will say that he knows knows the game very well and I always hope for the best for his Flyer teams.

There were mentions of my senior team in that book and comparisons between Chris Moore and Hickey, who led the nation in yards with 3100+. Chris was a junior and had nearly as impressive of a season and Shannon mentioned Hickey as motivation.

Chris ran like Barry Sanders and Larry Zonka - could blow you up or make you drop your jock.

As noted in MC/Flyer thread, my parents were East St. Louisians - the old man from Central Catholic (1933-11/15/2017) and my Mom from East Side - also 1951, but January. My Mom always mentioned that she was in the last "all white" graduation class of East Saint Louis Senior High. There was a black man in the May class - but not hers.

I grew up "up the hill" but I will always root for East Side.
