For you who follow...how much has UK invested in the football program in the last 5-7 years?
Remodel of Commonwealth, new facilities, maybe even increased coaching salaries, etc.
My brother and I have had an ongoing discussion the last two days via email of football programs...what recruits are looking for...what their parents are looking for...facilities...how coaching falls into the improvement of a program, etc. He's a big football fan (was offered a scholarship at Ohio State years back), but not a UK fan. We've been going back and forth about UK's new facilities.

Commonwealth - $126 million
Football Training Facility - $45 million
Annual coaching staff salary increase - maybe $4 million/year?

We're just now playing catch up. Hopefully the small band aids of seasons past are gone...you have to do timely upgrades/changes every few seasons, a la the big boys, just to show you're serious. Then you need a staff that can get a kid where he wants to be, and that can build a rapport with him and his family. Once you have all that, and a lot of schools do especially here in the South, things like tradition and culture come into play. We have finally gotten truly serious about the first two, and given the necessary time to build a strong foundation, we'll eventually get the third.

We're not going to get the kids it takes to beat Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia until we consistently beat Missouri, Carolina, State, and Vandy. We have to keep knocking at that door and eventually we are going to kick the sonofb!tch down.

Thanks for the info 'bthaunert'.
We've obviously been spending the money...hopefully it'll translate into wins now.
With the facility upgrades, now going forward it'll be interesting to see (if we can pinpoint it) if coaching can get us up to...and over the top. Or if tradition plays a much larger role.

For some odd reasons we defy the odds and fail to beat the top half of the SEC at a staggering rate. How in the world do you get one win combined against UT and Florida in 30+ years?

that's one of the main reasons we spent all that money.

It costs a pretty penny to up-grade when you haven't invested since "76"!

We actually had major upgrades in the 90s under Newton. The stadium was expanded from 56,000 to 69,000, luxury boxes were added, and we built the Nutter indoor training facility which was considered state-of-the-art at the time.

You are correct, and the biggest imbalance in spending was in mitch's first ten years, bare minimum maintenance in facilities, football operating AND recruiting budgets, you name it we had it. During the time when football was exploding in popularity and the rest of the SEC was pouring the money they earned from football back in to football--------we had a lot of making up to do, and still do. But there is just too much money pouring into SEC football for anyone to continue the ridiculous support we had before.

So that's how the field happens to bear his name? Sorry Deeeefence, I'm not buying anything that remotely resembles praise for our "basketball first" AD's! I loved both C M & Cliff Hagan as BB Players, but I sure as hell did not like them as CEO's of UK Athletics because of their policies regarding sports other than the BB Program!

I wasn't really praising Newton, just pointing out a fact. Newton gave us "basketball on grass" Hal Mumme the biggest joke we ever hired (well maybe the 2nd biggest joke). But he did put through major facility upgrades.
