There are strict limitations on when you can pop the chute and there have been more than few that have shredded because the pilot was outside the envelope when pulling the handle.This happened about a mile from where I live.

FAA did an interesting case study a couple of years ago on a guy that iced up crossing the Sierras. He pulled the chute and it shredded because he was too fast and over max deployment weight.
