A serious suggestion about officiating

Let's go back to two refs

Honestly I'd rather see two good refs who knew what they were doing and miss a few calls than the three blind mice approach we have presently

If there are not enough good refs to put 3 competent officials on the court consistently then let's go back to only using 2

I think we need three refs. One on each end and one at half court. Rotate on violations. The game has outpaced these older guys. Will be less fatigued. Baseline ref doesnt go past the opposite free throw lane and only looks for something flagrant when the ball is on the other end.

All we have to do is start allowing coaches challenges and things would begin to change. There are enough cameras in the game now. When certain officials start getting their calls reversed over and over and over the gig will be up. Take away one of the regular media timeouts and allow two challenges per half, with a charged timeout if your challenge fails. Done.

I think this is a good idea but man would the game slow down ...

Eliminating one ref would save a TON of money. Some of these guys, like Karl Hess, make over 6 figures on college bball and he is a psychologist "on the side."

My fear is that the game would become even more physical than it is now. So, I am not sure it would work.

Well, we had two today and that surely did not help.

Gives coaches 1 challenge a game. If they get the first one right, they are allowed one more, but 2 total is the max. Game stops an extra 4 times, max. Not a big deal. Heck, make tv timeouts every 5 minutes to compensate..

Point is, there are tons ways to have challenges that wouldn't slow the game down much.

They miss over 50% of the calls on run outs because the back ref is behind the play. Go back to the 2 referee system on half of the court and don't make them have to chase the players down the court. It has not cleaned up the game any by going to three referees.

Games are being decided on whether the assigned officials are either going to call the foul as described in the rule book, or just let the most physical team win. They should of never went away with the emphasis of the defense not being able to physically push you out of what you want to do. They may have of had to stick with it a month or two, but the teams would of eventually adjusted and the game would of been more fun to watch. Teams like Michigan St. really killed the college game. They allowed the defense to initiate contact and disrupt the offense. Instead of making a move and shooting over the defense, the offensive guy was physically pushed to spots on the floor that they couldn't score from. They have sort of cleaned up the game away from the basket, but it is still brutal underneath the goal.

I think one of the biggest problems right now is the game has become to fast for part time guys to keep up with. I think they need to go to 4 refs with 2 refs that stay on each side of the baseline permanently leaving the other 2 to run the floor. Secondly, make these guys professional. Force them to answer to their officiating.

Need more refs if anything. Games too fast. These guys already struggle being in the right position to see the play.

Actually, Hess' bio is unbelievably interesting:

Officiating is bad all over and it does not make any sense.

The let brutal muggings go on all game long in the post but call the most ticky tack non fouls imaginable all the rest of the time.

Phantom walks, etc.

I wonder if the reason the referees were so terrible today is because of Karl Hess' "voluntary" leave of absence. Hess does referee a LOT of UK games and I guess it could be probable that a referee had to change their plans and fill in for Hess.

Jmo. (No... I'm not taking up for the referees. They were terrible!)
