I was eating lunch today at a table net to a diverse group of UK Engineering Students. Knowing UK's engineering school has a very good reputation, recruiting all over the globe, I asked where they lived and why they ultimately chose UK. To a man they said that they knew that through UK Engineering School they could excel and reach the very top of their profession as well as ultimately making a great living for themselves and their families.

Naturally I became outraged that they would not be going to UK Engineering School because of the name on the front of the Engineering School building. The selfish "Engineers First" thing is not what we should want in our E School Students. That kind of attitude is the thing that is wrong with college students these days.

Thought you were going to say they gave you more than two ounces of steak on one of your tacos, though I knew that would be too unrealistic!

Thanks for the thread. Might go to Chipotle for dinner tonight. Haven't been there in a long time.

Same thing happened to me Saturday at our local tee ball fields. Since they only play for one year in tee ball and my time was short, I asked a few of the best players, "why do you play tee ball". One stood up immediately and said, " I want to be a major leaguer one day."

I was shocked. Clearly the name on the front of his jersey read "First Citizens National Bank". The fact that this kid is in it for himself Is very disturbing. These one and doner tee ball kids are just mercenaries. Brought in to better their own development. Their body language and walking style was all I needed to see anyway. It's sick the way tee ball has been perverted.

I dont think its fair the the Dean of Engineering at MIT only recruits those 5* engineers. We are left signing 3* geeks and having to develop them. There should be an inquiry to MIT's shady goings on.

Its because of World Wide Westinghouse.

It'll always fall on deaf ears.

People vastly overrate a college education.

They always argue that so many go broke after retiring from the NBA. I'd much rather my son get 10,000,000 at once, and pray I could teach him responsibility than him bank on making 40,000 a year after 4 years in college.

Pat Forde just wrote an article about WWW (World Wide Wasabi).....Chipotle's influence on UK and how it is ruining civilization as we know it.

Pics of these alleged Engineering students calculating the electrical load demand for the new renovations for Rupp Arena or it didn't happen.

I would also accept a pic of them calculating the structural load demand of the new East End Crossing Bridge in Louisville. Gotta make sure it is strong enough for me to still drive over it while all of the Cards fans are lining up to jump off of it when we win #9 this year.

TIA.

I'm pretty old, and I'm certainly not an intellectual, but ... the original post in this thread is a joke -- right ?

Yes, it is a joke.

Now quit yelling at me to sit down during the games at Rupp!!!

That was a joke as well.

And I bet they weren't fast paste either.

I read it after my nap and didn't get it right away. That time change did me in today. But, now I see the humor.

Why do we care about what the engineering students do after they graduate? I only care about how they perform for us fans in college.

As usual, well done. It saddens me that some here don't appreciate what you do.

Actually some of the names have been changed to protect the innocent but the events are quasi-factual.

I would add that of the 10 or so Engineering Students at the table, there were a couple who had a lot of AP credits prior to enrolling at UK and had taken a very heavy load of classes. These few will be ready to go into the workforce after just a year....but they are exceptional.

A few others who also had worked very hard with AP classes, summer classes, etc.... might take two or more years to achieve their goal of being a "Paid to Engineer" guy. Not all of them are able to "succeed to proceed" at the same rate. When they are ready to go.....they go. I however feel they should stay 4 years out of respect for the E School. Do you agree?

I don't know you from Adam, Dr. Lecter, but I assume that your recent post in response to mine was intended as a somewhat veiled confirmation that the original post was a joke.

To the degree that Animal Farm (Orwell), Gullivers Travels (Swift) and others were making jokes..... then yes. BTW I was just with Adam, he says "hey" and he'll introduce us later.

Another sign of our "me first" society. When I went to UK Engineering School in the '70s, we didn't recruit all this 5* talent form other countries and God knows where. We were all Kentucky boys (no girls!) that grew up dreaming to study at the UK Engineering School, and it had nothing to do with who was the Engineering Dean or how much money we could make after college. We just loved UK, and that's why we stayed 4, sometimes 5, sometimes more years!

I'm a UK Engineering alum, but I went there because I knew John Wall and Boogie had just committed to come to UK, and I'll be damned if I was going to miss an opportunity to watch those guys play.

Okay, not really. But seriously, I went to UK because it's a great engineering program AND has a lot of intangibles to offer that many other schools simply do not have.

I heard they are thinking about making freshmen wait a year to engineer. Apparently they need a "year of readiness."
