A stupid question….

Boo Buie, Chase Audige and Robbie Beran owe me nothing. If they wish to get on with their life, they have earned it. But, due to COVID, do they each have an extra year of eligibility. and would they use it for us. I have assumed not. But, is there any chance?

They do. We’ll have to wait and see. But winning is fun, and I can only imagine winning more this year increases the chances some or all would stay here.

I also can’t imagine Buie goes to play somewhere else in college if Battle remains on staff, but that’s a level of analysis we don’t need to get to.

For now, we can just enjoy the ride!

Bardo kept saying that this was the last time Boo would play at Assembly Hall, but he may have just been going off the media guide and forgot about the Covid year.

I think Audige has a chance of playing at the next level - if not the NBA, then certainly Europe or the G League. He may be ready to move on and make some money. Unless he gets a nice NIL deal to say.

That's a good point I never considered. If you need to invest NIL money, why not do it for your own, proven guys. If we need to go down the NIL road, I like the idea of overpaying, getting another year and investing in your own guys.

It's a wild new world.

The Welsh-Ryan beer distributor should do a NIL deal with the Seniors. Better team ----> higher attendance ---> more beer sales.

Chase should get a local NIL deal with Chase Bank. That's a no-brainer.

Seriously, the lead guard role is scary next season without Chase or Boo returning. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Chase (elite defender). Regardless, Roper does not seem to be right guy for the role, and I like Barney and Berry on the wing. Obviously, the portal might yield something.

But that is a discussion for after our tourney run...

Next year we might have a true frosh in the lead guard role. Unless Collins decides to let Brumbaugh transfer in. :D

There are a lot of reasons I love this idea!

Crazy thought: Remember the Nike guys not showing their Team USA Adidas gear (or vice versa).

For argument’s sake, say BMO Harris is Northwestern’s sponsoring bank. Do you think their contact says that, I don’t know JPM Chase Audige is not allowed to get a contract with Chase Bank?

Brave New World!

The University has no say in what the athletes decide to do around NIL. Harris may not like it but they have no recourse to stop it.

Not only is the player likely not bound by the university’s contract, the university’s contract was likely written and executed before NIL rights for players were a thing. As a result, it’s extremely unlikely that such a contract could prohibit a player from signing his own deal.

There could be something in the grant-in-aid, such as a morality clause, preventing deals with inappropriate companies (e.g., sports betting platforms would be a clear no-go). But otherwise I’d expect it’s fair game for players to do what they want.

Friend of mine is a Utah fan. I was all excited for him because Cam Rising is returning. He was like 'he had to, he has a 600k NIL'

Just to point out it can be used to retain upperclassmen
