About time for this...

A decade-long lurker here on the forum, but what the heck. 47, wife (no pics), son, daughter, and live in Western Wisconsin. I grew up in this area, but wrestled high school in Minnesota. Went to state a few times in the late 90's, ended up wrestling for UWL for 4 years. We were tough in D3 (still are), even beating the Badgers my freshman year. Won a couple of national dual titles, but never could get that natty away from Augsburg or Wartburg.

I've coached wrestling since I left college at various levels, and I still have an intense love for the sport. My son was a fairly successful wrestler in WI and now is carrying on the family tradition of wrestling in college. All in all, we've had 11 members of my family wrestle in college, so get-togethers are always a lot of fun.

I became a Hawkeye fan in the mid 90's. My mom let me stay up late for some reason on a weeknight, and I caught a replay of IPTV on our local cable channel, and it was a Hawks dual. I know it's been discussed on the board, so I will say it, but the one where Aure (RIP) got dq'd out. Through a twist of fate later in life, I became friends with Aaron and our sons wrestled together at club. Funny how wrestling works that way. Anyway, that dual got me hooked on Hawks wrestling, and I've been a huge fan ever since, even been down to Carver a few times.

I personally love to trap anything with fur, hunt everything, and fish as much as possible. Once my career is finished up, I will retreat to the fur shed full time

Well, I certainly don't hate it! Beaver fur is the best out there. And you can actually eat......nevermind

ILCC, only the 85 season which was my sophomore year. Coaches talked me into spring ball and felt great being back on the field and with guys I’d competed against in HS. Played mostly special teams but did have 1 INT. Iowa Central beat us in FD.

In Cedar Rapids, our Phys. Ed teachers started showing us wrestling "positions" in the third grade back in 1959. (At 7-8 years old, some girls will kick your butt.) Wrestled through high school. Some of my coaches are listed on the walls in Stillwater, so it wasn't their fault that I was barely average, unlike the state champs on some of my high school teams.
I went to Ia. St. for two years, hated it and transferred out, but I did some fun play-by-play for campus radio of some of the wrestling meets while I was there in the early 70s. I lived and worked in Iowa City for five years in the late 70s, and went to many meets when Gable was still developing the team. I stopped following so much in the 80s and 90s when I moved away for more school and work, but picked it up again when I got homesick some thirty years ago.

Crazy Boston fans have cured me of caring about pro sports long ago, but I still follow the Hawks in several sports, and college wresting anywhere. Been married 38 years now, and retirement lets me hit the gym 5 days a week, but old father time caught up to some of my joints.
There's always something new to learn, and I still learn from each of you.

True, but alot of variation in whether fur shed guys like blonde, red, brown, or black beaver. Preferences sometimes vary based on the going prices. Also, some like long haired pelts, some prefer sheared beaver.

At 24 I was still dabbling in freestyle tournaments, and my plan was to wrestle one more time--at freestyle nationals--then retire from wrestling and focus on a career. But I lost 2 in a row, 15-0 and 15-0, and it made me feel like a big part of my identity had been kind of a joke. So instead of retiring, I quit my job, moved to Iowa and dedicated myself to placing at nationals. I competed for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club from 1987-91, placing 8th in 90 & 91. Going to Iowa was the smartest stupid thing I ever did. (Even my mom tried to talk me out of it--she felt I was refusing to grow up.) I have lived in NYC since '95. I have two grown kids (28 & 25) from my first marriage, and a 4-year-old son from my current marriage. I'm sure my mom thinks I am still refusing to grow up, but she likes having the extra grandkid. No pics, but my wife is beautiful & smart & kind, and I am blessed to have a second chance at love and fatherhood at age 63. Always a Hawk fan, but increasingly irritated at the state of the program.
